Dang - Cigarettes jumped from $3.75 to $7.42 a pack in one day.

Please no talking about how bad cigarettes are for you, etc...

They doubled the price in one day. Has this happened to anyone else? Surely it's not just my area. I live in Alabama by the way.

Why in the world did this happen?! Is this Obama's doing?

      Here's something funny:
When I was at the counter asking for cigarettes, the cashier said you don't want those for that price. I said, "yeah I do, two packs marlboro reds please". She pointed to the price tag that said $7.42. I was like "holy crap! is this some sort of joke?" Some old guy behind me in line said, "I'm gonna start smoking dope now, it's cheaper hahaha". I was lmfao.

PS. Please excuse any grammatical or spelling errors, I'm under the influence of my sleeping medication and it makes me kinda loopy.

EDIT: Oh I can see it now. Gas stations are going to get robbed a lot now. I'll be walking down the street and hear: "I got the cartons! $50 per carton great deal!" They'd sell like hotcakes.

Just HOW loopy does your meds make you? You HAVE to be kidding!
I live in West Virginia and I bought 2 packs of Marlboro Menthol 100's at $3.50-ish just yesterday.
Hopefully they will go up in price- maybe then I'll finally be able to quit...

I know that quitting a nicotine addiction is one of the hardest things some people can ever do so I won't throw out the whole "Why can't you just stop?" At the same time, I have little sympathy for those who have decided to make the choice to start a smoking habit in the first place.
Perhaps I worded that incorrectly. I am not trying to say that all the blame goes to the companies, but they do make cigarettes worse without telling you and increase the chances of you not being able to quit. Additives galore.

...and yes people make the choice to start. People make mistakes; they should not have to die for it. These companies should be annihilated. Period. (but that's a whole different topic)

I agree with Ame's on this one. Ever heard the saying "You can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink it"? In the aforementioned metaphor...the cigarette companies are the water and the horse are those who choose to smoke or not to smoke. Relieving yourself of personal responsibility over YOUR actions is voluntarily giving YOUR power to change YOUR SITUATION away to whomever YOU laid blame on. In essence...I'm saying what you said is by far one of the biggest cop outs I've ever heard. And while I never drank a glass of alcohol or put a cigarette in my mouth...I personally understand addiction very well.
      Lucky you. See above.

My response to you was more about how the smokers are being punished for being addicted to something; it is beyond greedy. Beating the addict will not solve the problem. That is my only point.

Edit: Actually it is not beating, but robbing the addict. That says a lot about motivation.

I've smoked off and on for about 5 years, but recently I started buying "roll your own" cigarettes and it's an easy way to cut back, seeing as how you have to take time to roll it first. If tobacco ever got too expensive I'd just drive up the road to my great uncle's farm and pick my own burley tobacco

I hate to reign on your parade. but non smokers die everyday... some die from eating the wrong food, or lack thereof. many die from car accidents, guns and war. and who the hell wants to spend the last years of their life in an old folks home helpless. live hard, die young I say.

How is that "revelation" "raining on my parade?" You must think I live in a bubble where people don't die...Master Shredder . Hate to disappoint. I digress so to get to the point...those deaths which you referred to our out of context deaths. I say that because smoking cigarettes (in terms of suicide) is no different from popping cyanide salt pills. Both kill you and both affect the user by the user's own merit. But those are just my own thoughts...I tend to rather enjoy living...so sue me .

He is complaining about his right to make his own damn choices.

I think you have little understanding of the pain of addiction. The cigarette companies are the culprit; not the victims.

I just want to mention that if the US goes in the direction of socialized medicine (an idea I am strongly opposed to but I won't get into that now), it's in the government's best interest to get people to stop smoking. Taking preventative action keeps health care costs down. If you're fat, it's in the government's best interest to "help" you lose weight so you won't be prone to obesity-related/enhanced illnesses. Whether or not that's the deciding factor when it comes to raising taxes on cigarettes, I don't know. It's something to consider, though.

Well you should know that nationwade the tobacco tax has increased by quite a bit it hasn't reached my state yet, but it's gonna happens soon. If you know where to look you can get the buy 1 get 1 frees for around 4.40 still, but single packs in the wrong place are around 6.00 outrageous.
