Haha, first you have to get Bali Shag or Drum brand tobacco, and filters are a must!

I can see it now... pre-made, refrigerated coffee and tea. Just pour a glass and pop it in the microwave! Ad slogan, "Who has time to brew their own coffee these days?" Then they show a man fumbling around with a coffee maker and spilling boiling water everywhere. Billy Mayes could be the spokesman... along with that guy from the Tae-Bo videos haha... I might went overboard...

Yeah, although why stop there - why not sell it pre-drunk for those who can't be bothered lifting the cup to their mouth??

I think you have little understanding of the pain of addiction. The cigarette companies are the culprit; not the victims.

I don't want to come across as combative, but I fail to see how the cigarette companies are the culprits. They are absolutely not victims, but they do not stick a cigarette in someone's mouth and order them to smoke it.

I've known enough people who have suffered through various addictions, cigarettes included. I know that quitting a nicotine addiction is one of the hardest things some people can ever do so I won't throw out the whole "Why can't you just stop?" At the same time, I have little sympathy for those who have decided to make the choice to start a smoking habit in the first place.

I just want to mention that if the US goes in the direction of socialized medicine (an idea I am strongly opposed to but I won't get into that now), it's in the government's best interest to get people to stop smoking. Taking preventative action keeps health care costs down. If you're fat, it's in the government's best interest to "help" you lose weight so you won't be prone to obesity-related/enhanced illnesses. Whether or not that's the deciding factor when it comes to raising taxes on cigarettes, I don't know. It's something to consider, though.

No, he is complaining about his "right" to kill himself. Big (contextual) difference.

I agree with Ame's on this one. Ever heard the saying "You can bring a horse to water but you can't make him drink it"? In the aforementioned metaphor...the cigarette companies are the water and the horse are those who choose to smoke or not to smoke. Relieving yourself of personal responsibility over YOUR actions is voluntarily giving YOUR power to change YOUR SITUATION away to whomever YOU laid blame on. In essence...I'm saying what you said is by far one of the biggest cop outs I've ever heard. And while I never drank a glass of alcohol or put a cigarette in my mouth...I personally understand addiction very well.

Well you should know that nationwade the tobacco tax has increased by quite a bit it hasn't reached my state yet, but it's gonna happens soon. If you know where to look you can get the buy 1 get 1 frees for around 4.40 still, but single packs in the wrong place are around 6.00 outrageous.

Perhaps I worded that incorrectly. I am not trying to say that all the blame goes to the companies, but they do make cigarettes worse without telling you and increase the chances of you not being able to quit. Additives galore.

...and yes people make the choice to start. People make mistakes; they should not have to die for it. These companies should be annihilated. Period. (but that's a whole different topic)

Lucky you. See above.

My response to you was more about how the smokers are being punished for being addicted to something; it is beyond greedy. Beating the addict will not solve the problem. That is my only point.

Edit: Actually it is not beating, but robbing the addict. That says a lot about motivation.

Just thought I'd include this for those who may not know that something like this exist. There's far too many options out there now and there really isn't a reason why someone should still be smoking.

Except that e-cigs aren't as good as the real thing. They're a good option for quitting though.

I don't smoke, and never will.
Do you mind? Yes? Bad luck.

I wouldn't want my partner to be a smoker either.

Smokes have been 10 buck a pack for years now in Canada.

As a result, cheap indian cigarettes have flooded the (black) market, costing 10-20 bucks a carton. If the intended result was to increase tax revenue, then it was an epic fail.

in that case you are the definition of an addict, is it possible to be able to use something and not abuse it. Kid, youre doing the live life to the fullest speech, will your life be full when you are diagnosed with cancer ? Since all of our bodies are different, we respond to chemicals differently, for some people they can smoke their whole lives and be perfectly fine others, smoke for a few years, and they already have bronchial condition's, you may not even be aware of your families medical history, the smartest thing to do is not to smoke. If you still think it is not bad for you, it definitely isnt good for you, can you find an alternative to replace cigarettes.
As for the companies, they should get shut down but they wont due to the huge industry and the amount of taxes the government recieves. We should be able to sue them, but guess what they have a warning label on it, so we cant do sh1t. Looks like you are all suckers when you get lung or mouth cancer, and most importantly guess who is to blame.
Just so you dont think im a non-smoker, never smoked, bla bla bla, i have been smoking, and quite honestly i dont see how anyone can enjoy the amounts of phlem always in your throat from cigarettes, and then just think about the amount of tar you are ingesting, that turned me away from cigarettes. I quit one day, and never smoke again. No such thing as an addiction its all in the mind, if you really want to quit just realize how nasty it is, trust me your brain will overcome any desire. the addiction is a simply weakness, if you set your mind to it you can quit cold turkey

as every smoker knows.. it is damn hard tryin to quit. believe me i have tried plenty of times. the e-cig sounds pretty cool but i have tried avaporizer before and it just sucked balls. it tasted nasty and it wasn't enjoyable. so although it's better health wise, it's not so much in taste wise, and appeal. i know, although it tastes good it is not good for you, you'll be stinky and you can't get cancer, but hey, what about those of you that eat out? mcdonalds and bk aren't that healthy. you increase the risk of heart attack, and high blood pressure, it is bad for you, and your breath ends up smelling like onion rings and your hands are all greasy when i shake them... it's disgusting!!!!
so same point different subject...nways,
fags here are up to 6.40 here. i gotta quit...

try.. uk.. £5.35 for 20 ciggarettes.. thats what i pay.. hang on let me convert........................................... .................................................. .................................................. ....... $11.02 per 20 cig

ps i thought the person who started this thread specifically asked that it stay on the topic of cost and not another chance for non smokers to preach their bullshit

pps... in the case of the uk its the smokers who support the health service.. yes we use it eventually through smoking related illnesses.. but our tobacco taxes contribute so much towards it that if everyone quit they wouldnt even break even.

I think the addiction is in the head
it is a lot harder after a while.
It is a habit.
I know someone who had many things to help her quit
like she had the habit of having gum or mints after she smoked
and if she had a mint, she wouldn't feel the need to smoke.
It might, unfortunetely be so bad that they are addicted...and can't stop with will power.

Well there are receptors in your brain that scream out for more nicotine when you even take a single puff after say 40 years. This never goes away. This is the physical addiction that is broken within a few weeks; so long as you do not ever smoke again. It is the simple science behind why cold turkey works the best. The harder issue is the subconscious programming that takes years to (completely) undo. Every neural connection that links a cigarette to literally thousands of activities. It can be undone....all of it....but it takes a good 8 months or so with bouts of agony, followed by a few years of wanting a smoke about once every few months or more.

Being addicted to "french fries" as some people might understand it, is no understanding at all.
