Saving Nature Creates a Future for Mankind

I found this gem on ted.com, go visit it now if you haven't.

In the past couple of years, the average westerner has become aware that our lifestyle has raped some of the most diverse natural environments in the world. And we have slowly become aware, that in the process - we virtually steal these natural resources from the local people. Creating a poverty in our wake, that wasn't there before

every story is a little different

but regardless of who it is to blame, what we are left with are people living in abject poverty. and a dying eco system, that the people can no longer live off of. and then we have the problem of the population boom, which we have now linked to health. as health standards go down (poverty) people have more babies. as health standards go up, population levels off.

the situation has felt so hopeless. and has made an entire generation of kids feel that we, as a human race, are just a disease

rather than seeing the bigger picture here - how we are a part of nature. And how saving nature saves humanity. Or in a modern perspective, we can create an entire thriving economy on saving nature.

For many people, this is just an idea. But this man made it into a realization. On a scale of which I've never seen before!! Regrowing a rain forest? Saving a people from poverty? You've got to be kidding right?

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vfuC...e=channel_page

Now that he's done this.............we have no more excuses!

Save nature? We can't even take care of ourselves for Christ's sake, and we're going to save nature?

Besides, planet has been here 4 and a half billion years and been through much, much worse than us. We've been here maybe 200 thousand and engaged in heavy industry for little over a couple hundred years? Do the math. We're not going to make a dent on this planet, or nature. It'll adapt, repair itself, incorporate everything going on. The planet is fine, nature is fine. We're the ones who are fucked.

The planet has been through much worse, and will continue to be through much worse than us. We'll barely leave a footprint on this place when it's finished with us.

Save nature. That is such an arrogant, egotistical and downright conceited idea.

Besides, all this crap about saving the Ozone? Bunk. It's already been "saved."

Not that the actions portrayed in the video aren't commendable, but its crazy to think we matter enough to have a real effect on the planet, nature and such things that are infact greater than us.

If we wanted we could make "a" dent in the world.
Saving nature should refer to keeping nature the way we like it. Nature obviously doesn't need saving, it just is.

did either of you watch the video? seriously, what's up both your asses? this man has done so much, and you have nothing to say about it? just pointless negative bickering? for what ends?

please don't bother commenting unless you are going to watch the video. this thread is not an argument of whether or not we should save nature, but rather this thread is about what this man has done, and what it means

We can save the planet by killing ourselves. See, I have evidence~

We cannot destroy nature, on the contrary, nature will elemenate the problem. Guess what the problem is?

seriously? if you guys are going fucking retarded, I am just going to ask for this thread to be locked

please reread the title. the title says, saving nature CREATES A FUTURE FOR MANKIND. why are making arguments about two words I choose for the title? the title is not synamanous with the bloody content of the thread.

it will only take 20 minutes of your time to watch one of the most hopeful and inspiring stories. and if you just can't spend 20 minutes of your time to watch a hopeful and inspiring story, then you're pathetic. take your need to be a depressing useless apathetic human else where.

this thread is for mature people

this thread is not for people who just want to sit on their arse and whine, while others have PROVEN we have a choice. and we CAN and MUST do something about it

you don't want to watch the video, of which this thread is about - PISS OFF

your argument, what ever it was - has nothing to do with what this thread is about

for those of you who can't, for what ever reason, understand the content of a thread, and instead think two words sums it up................this thread was always about the suffering of humanity directly relating to the destruction of eco systems. and how we as humans, we just don't have to sit here and keep shooting ourselves in the foot

we can help nature regenerate these eco-systems, we can stir up new economies as we do so, and bring humanity out of poverty

that is what this thread is about. watch the video. and discuss what it means for humanity that we can do this.

Exobyte is right. You lack perspective. We're not killing the planet. The planet is 1,000,000,000s of years old. If every human suddenly disappeared tomorrow, in a hundred years the planet would look exactly like it did 10,000 years ago save a few buildings, and give it another 1,000 years and they'll be gone too. Like most humans you fail to realise that you are just a drop in the ocean.

The planet used to be a boiling blob of lava for goodness sakes.

He did an awesome job, we need more like him

But yes, ecosystems and the thriving of man is directly linked together. If we just help the ecosystems a little, they will do the rest of the job itself. All will benefit from it, just like in the video.

That was a really fascinating video. It's amazing what that guy accomplished in so little time.
