'lo again GD. I think there's two answers to both of those questions. it's up to you to chose which you believe in. For question number one:
1.) The "realistic" answer. These people are very likely just characters that your mind has made up, and just as your mind can fool you into believing that you are in another reality (IE non-lucid dreams), the mind can fool you into assuming there are preexisting relationships. The mind sees a LOT of people that you forget or don't even notice, so there's many canvases for it to paint a background on.
I've had many dreams where I felt a strong connection with someone I do not know in real life, I've even had dreams of characters that look EXACTLY like someone I know in real life, yet I am convinced in the dream that I know them another way (For example: my friend "Bob" is actually my rival brother in a dream)
2.) The "supernatural" option. Perhaps you knew them in another life, or on another level of existence or some such. Though not super-natural (although I'd say unlikely) perhaps you've known these characters several times before in other dreams that you don't remember, and they've created a stable relationship.

I personally side with answer number 1. Same goes for the other question: There's a realistic answer, and a "believer's" answer. Maybe it was a prediction of the future. Or it was just chance that you had that dream.
Your choice.
Edit: oh, and as to the sepia-tone...well, I'm not really sure. D= Perhaps will power and auto-suggestion could fix that?
But it's not uncommon at all to have a reoccurring setting. Is it a place that you feel very comfortable in or have strong memories of? It could be a sort of anchor or safe haven for the mind. (Even though I barely go there at all anymore, I have MANY dreams of my grandmothers house, for the reasons I mentioned.
Either way, I'd view it as a good thing. For now on, whenever you're in or see your backyard, do a RC!
