Consisten Dream Locations? Help understanding this?

It seems I often dream of particular places over and over. Only, these places do not exist in my waking world.
One example that is most recent is this wooden house. I am usually on the upper floors of this house, and there is this family who lives there. I'm not sure if I know the people who live there, but they are always the same people.

Anyway, the odd thing is, while I am dreaming, I KNOW I've been to this place before. The times this has happened, I for some reason did not seize the opportunity to become lucid, so even though I was still having a "normal" dream, I thought to myself "oh I've been here before, and this or that happened". for example, the other night I was at the wooden house again, and remembered that last time I was here, I was trying to walk up the stairs, which were covered in flowing water, on which huge koi fish were swimming to get down the stairs. (obviously not just some memory from the waking world

I was remembering a past dream while IN a dream) Only, I did not know I was dreaming at the time, as I said, so I only remembered this as a past experience at this house. I just lived my dream as if it were the waking world, and simply viewed this past dream as a normal memory.

Anyone else experience this? What is it called, and why does it happen? Does it mean anything? I'd love to hear some stories about it, if you have experienced this before!

I just consider this dream memory I do not know if there is some technical name for it though. I have mostly experienced this 'dream memory' when I have had nightmares mostly (as they are the dreams which reoccur the most for me.) I will have the same dream and try to go into the same room, try to hide in the same place, run the same way, etc. but stop my self saying when I did that in the dream before this or that happened and do something different in the dream based off of this memory of the dream before. (I hope you can understand that

I think it happens as sort of bridge to lucid dreaming. You are aware enough to know you have had this dream before, but not aware enough to care to take over the dream in a more lucid state.
