Sounds to me like it's HI. If you're into lucid dreaming, you can use that to your advantage! |

Usually when I go to sleep at night, I lie for a moment and think of random stuff. Then after maybe 5 minutes, I see strange lights. As if someone is shining a flashlight into my eyes. Sometimes the lights form a geometric pattern. I was wondering if this was HI, or something else entirely. |

Yes, this is hypnagogic imagery, also called hypnagogic hallucinations. They should most of the times be followed by sound, and you should really anjoy them. I like watching them and even affecting them in some degree, especially the sound. As they begin to become illogical, they are becoming more and more intense, so if you are relaxed and passive-observing enough, you can create your own songs, landscapes and stuff. It's like a pre-dream, you should consider it part of the lucid dreaming process! And it's fun as hell. Sometimes I take afternoon naps not hoping to WILD, but just observe these images |

REALITY CHECK
Spoiler for nothing:
I used to get the "white light" exactly as you describing it shortly before lucid dream. Just hang in there, the images should shortly change into more complex images and dreams. Then the dream either envelops you, or you pick a spot in a dream and wish to be there. This should transport you inside the dream. |
