Especially when lying on your back, an increasingly fast heartbeat can definitely become a nuisance - and as you've said, deteriorate the state you've achieved quite quickly. The only thing I can suggest would be to begin a phase of meditative breathing to try and control your guys' heartbeats. Also, try your best to take your mind off of it (if at all possible). If you become fixated on your heartbeat, it will become quite hard to slow it down and get your mind back on the topic - WILDing.

As for how you should get your mind off of your heartbeat, That's entirely up to you. However, a couple suggestions of mine would be do either get lost in your breathing, flow with it and focus on it. Another would be to begin imagining what your dream will be like, what you will do, etc. Lastly, when you're close to entering a WILD, you should get a 'falling' sensation, like you're being pulled into/through your bed. I quite enjoy this feeling, so when I need to focus on something, I focus on and enhance that sensation.

@goldy101 - If you are under the impression that sleep paralysis is needed to perform a WILD, you have been misinformed. Yes, it does have its benefits, but if you think you're restrained because you can't enter sleep paralysis, get that outta your head! Read up on Wilding techs, and everything associated with Wilding. I'm sure you'l figure out what you need to do to get some lucids through that form of induction.

Are you guys in your normal sleeping position when this occurs? If so, it's just over-excitement, and you should learn relaxation and breathing techniques to counter it. But if you're trying to WILD in a position other than the one you normally sleep in, and don't eventually change that position, that could be an obstacle in itself.

I've been WILDing for a few years now with decent success (though any given attempt is very unpredictable) and one very distinct pattern has emerged. For most of the night I am a side sleeper, but when I WILD I always start on my back. This is not because I expect to be successful in this position, but rather it serves to delay sleep long enough to reach the distinctive trance-like state that is most conducive to lucidity. Then I roll over on my side -- so that I can actually fall asleep!

I used to lie on my back and do all kinds of techniques and start to feel like I was very close to WILDing successfully... and then I would wake up and wonder why it wasn't working, and eventually give up and turn over on my side. And that's when the WILDs would actually happen. Eventually I realized that this "giving up" was actually part of the technique, because until that moment it was simply too hard to fall asleep, and without falling asleep, it's hard to dream properly!

We all eventually develop our own variants of the possible techniques, but if what you're doing isn't working for you, try something different. If your current technique is keeping you too awake, then modify it in a way that will let you fall asleep afterward. Don't worry about SP -- you may or may not feel it. Whether you do or not is unimportant. The main thing is getting your mind into the proper state, which means keeping it focused and awake for a while at first, and then picking just the right moment to let it drift toward sleep.
