Talking Recording Our Dreams - Possible or Impossible?

Do you think it will be impossible or possible in the year 2030, over 20 years from now, we will be able to go online a purchase a dream recorder?

Or even be able to have expensive surgery so they can attach a wireless transmitter to our cerebral cortex or our eye nerves. Then the signal and properties are recorded and transmitted to our computer where is is analysed and then converted into a visual format? (just a basic example, lol)

Or will the need for a dream recorder be to little to warrant research and development into such an area?

Or will it stem from another more appropriate invention? (computerised vision for the blind - from a camera on the forehead connected to the appropriate nerve cells, etc).

I bet if someone invented a dream recorder today they would be instantaneous millionaires. Imagine all the self-made videos that would be posted on youtube? You wouldn't have to do anything anymore to create your own drama, or plot or script or special effects - or even pay the actors.

Except they might have to make it so it can record audio as well instead of just visual stimuli.

Imagine creating your own full-blown and limitless dream movie with a lucid dream.

Anyway, share you thoughts and discuss.

Have you seen the movie Paprika? Their dream projecting device does not work out so well.

It sounds possible until I consider some of the dreams I have that have no visuals, just emotions. Or dreams of the void, or feelings of bizarre body distortions. I've had some dreams that were close to a DMT trip. Total loss of ego, or an encounter with a presence that is too powerful to be experienced by any of your waking senses.

Some of those things would be hard to project onto a screen. We often remember dreams as if they were movies, but there is a lot more to them than that.

Maybe I should go read that thread Tornado_Joe linked.

The brain is so complex, that just external readings won't be enough.
Im afraid we will have to wait for a functional mind-machine-interface, which will take about 50-100 years. Then you will have to add an extra 50 years or so on that till it becomes available for the public (expect the military to get monopoly of such technology - or it simply will be too expensive when it first comes).

It's not a question of "if" we will be able to understand the brain so good that we can create a mind-machine-interface - the question is "when".

My question is whether or not medicine or science can offer ways to manipulate dreams. Use a certain device, take a certain drug, and you can order a dream as if it were in a video catalogue! I think I may have heard of this being done before using narcotics, but I'm not sure.

I have been thinking about this idea at well, I would constantly run over ideas with my mother (whether she was listening or not lol =P). I thought how awesome it would be to have your own Visual Dream Library...but we have yet to make a machine that could even think about competing with the advanced-ness our brains have.

I thought it would be good, because sometimes you just can't explain a dream. It's a sort of "you had to be there" kind of experience. But like Robot_Butler mentioned, you'd have to have an interface that could connect the mind with the person watching it. What if you had a spiritual dream, or an OBE in your dream? The person watching wouldn't be able to understand as well. They wouldn't really understand the dream unless you could hook their body up to a machine that would send them the emotions you were sensing if you had a void-like dream. An empathetic machine, if you will.

I'm ranting here, but that's because this situation is more complex than we can even imagine. I believe that sometime in the future it will be possible, but alas, I believe my grandchildren won't live to see that day. =P

And experience it as a place to visit and play with reality.

I'm sure they would be able to record dreams in the reasonably forseeable future; decades.
