Interesting thing I learned in psychology

My psychology book said that most people dream of failure more than success. I know I personally dream of failing, or being late, or being lost almost 95% of the time. My only guesses as to why this happens is that A)Most people have low self esteem that carries into dreams or B)A logical person in an illogical world is bound to fail.

I was wondering what you thought about this.

Huh. Interesting! I wonder how they went about collecting that data though. I take all of these psychology statistics with a grain of salt - goodness knows, not everyone practices valid research techniques.

But assuming it's true, hmm I dunno. I wouldn't say that most people have low self esteem, though your second point about being in an illogical world makes a lot of sense.

Hmm. Now that I think about it I guess most of my dreams have no purpose at all. Things are just happening in a number of different contexts around me... I'm not involved at all... strange, never given this much thought...

my dreams are almost always like fantasy stories, I have a purpose which i find out at some point or a reason and the actions i do can make me succeed or fail at it. but most of the time i suceed at what i am trying to do. however a lot of the time it is very difficult, time changes, crazy robot cows, all sorts of wierd crap happens.
~I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.~

well we dream about thinsg which are important to us. The dreams represent new thoughts. ways to eliminate problems inlife.

so it really makessense that we dream more about failure than success. We are tryingto eliminate problems

It remind sme all of the old communist state news. They used to have good reports only. They told you how good the harvests were, how productivity was increasing etc... whereas western news reports concentrate on problems... bad news. Its better to concentrate on problems really because tahts the best way to improve our lives

The dream dictionary on this website is unlike many other dream dictionaries. The symbolic meanings inside this dictionary are based on interpretations of hundreds of real dreams.A bank of dreams is used which are believed to be correctly interpreted. A process known as backwards engineering is used. First you take a dream. Then you try to spot obvious issues which will surely trigger a dream. eg If you had a major argument the night before then surely you will dream about this issue. If the symbols seem to link to this real life event in other ways then its added to a bank of dreams which is then studied intensively. So if you had a major argument and then had a dream that night about a raging alsatian dog then you can guess that this symbol represents that argument in some way.

also alot of times if you dream of something you have never done before, then you would not know what it is like to sucede so it might be easier for your subconcious to just go down the fail route because it just puts us in situations weve all been before

Well, if you assume that a dream is a metaphysical manifestation of your society (i.e. environment) and if you feel empowered to pursue the veil of societal construct (i.e. false beauty, false security, false happiness, etc.) then of course you will dream of nothing but failure. However, the rectification of this problem is personal and lies in the pursuit of your identity alone. Why should society dictate who you are and why should it manipulate your dreams? This leads to a frightening dilemma: who actually has control?

The evolutionary school of thought on dreams is that they evolved into a mechanism for a being able to practice tricky situations and try new things. Those whose brains tended to practice the hardest situations would then have a greater tendency to succeed in real life and not get eaten or something. So it makes sense that a larger proportion of our dreams would be under 'nightmarish' circumstances that would facilitate failure. Some dreams you repeat until you get right too. I recall a specific (non lucid)dream I had climbing a tower in a jungle, there was a section that was extremely difficult, and I would fall and then instead of waking up, I would just try again. I know I repeated that tricky part at least 5 times but i eventually succeeded.

I also think that self esteem may effect levels of dream successes, though I also wonder how big of a role dream successes may play in effecting your waking self esteem.

This is pretty much how my dreams are.

Which surprises me since I have terrible self esteem. You wouldn't believe how often in class I know the answer to a question but refuse to say anything because I just keep thinking... what if I'm wrong? And unfortunately for the most part my answers are right.

You would think I have those dreams where you are in the middle of school suddenly naked or in underwear. But I don't, haha.

I think that reflects the fears of our modern civilisation. The fear of failure may be the most prevalent and deep rooted in our production and consumption society. Man is a fearsome creature and every age manifests its own set of major fears. Besides if that study was done in the USA, it would be a miracle, if fear wasn't be the main element.

Failure is the key to success. Success is the sum of all your failures. Think about it.

Each failure is as a step closer to success. Each failure is another possibility you limited out of the equation.

Say you have to guess a random number between 1 and 100, and you may try as much as you want. Each failed attempt at guessing will bring you closer to a successful guess. Success chances are 100% if you persist long enoug. If you failed 99 times for example, you will know for sure that when you try one more time, you will have garantueed success.

There's one important condition. We need to remember our failures to get to success. If you would forget the numbers you guessed in the example I gave, you may as will never reach success at all. That is why we dream so much about failure imo.

it's like the other post where (I thought of it too ) the guy said that dreams are just a way of your mind training you for situations.

you probably dream failures so that you can "practice" incase it happens in real life, and for your mind to assess your actions
