      Spontaneous Recollection of Older Dreams

Sometimes in the morning when I wake up I will not only recall that night's dream(s) but will recall dreams from a while ago, probably at least 1 year ago or more. I only started keeping a dream journal 2 and a half months ago and I did not remember ever recalling or remembering these dreams before but I really feel as if they are very old dreams. From my understanding dreams are erased from your mind if you do not make an effort to recall them but is it possible that all the dreams you have ever had are floating around somewhere in the deep recesses of your mind and may just happen, like in this case, to come to the surface at some point?

Happens to me all the time. It seems like there's not just short-term and long-term memory, but also 'deep' memory...stuff that's in there, but not able to come out when the brain is busy maintaining the body. I find I remember dreams--and other things, too--from a long time ago much better in the middle of the night.

I've actually dreamed being back at certain dream locations that I haven't dreamed since childhood. Most of the time, I become lucid due to my recognition of these locations. It's a pretty weird sense of nostalgia during sleep and after waking up.

Yes! This happened to me just recently in fact. The dream was so fuzzy and hard to remember when I had it, I couldn't even tell what it was or where it was or who was in it. But that was about a year ago, it was barely a week ago that I remembered the full details of that dream, all within a matter of seconds. It's practically a short story now!

There was a trigger and that was remembering the location where it was set. Strangely though, not the immediate location, but the geographical location - which I don't think I could have possibly known in the dream.

I've had a few dreams that I recognized instantly from being years ago, even if I didn't remember them at the time. It's fun, you can fix a nightmare by knowing what you did the first time. One really scary nightmare is now funny
