Someone help me explain this.. and another question about disturbing dreams.

      Hello there

Just a little bit about me:
I have had a few lucid dreams and have kept a dream journal for the past 2 years or so, purely because I enjoy reading about my own dreams.

I am a little bit confused about an incident that happened the other night. I fell asleep listening to (easy listening) music. About an hour later, I heard (and felt) myself screaming, and I opened my eyes, and abruptly pulled my covers back and switched on my lamp. This all happened very quickly.. and without any conscious thought/control. I had awoken with an extreme fear, but I wasn't sure what I was afraid of. It was as though I had had a nightmare, but I couldn't recall it. The only thing I could remember were these eyes that watched me. I don't really know how to explain it, but I have never felt that scared in my life before. I was shaking and almost began to cry, and felt really paranoid about everything. I was so afraid that I had to sleep in my parent's bed - however, everytime I closed my eyes I would envision frightening images, like a girl eating glass with blood gushing out of her mouth.

So does anyone have any clue what happened to me at that point? I'm still weirded out by the whole experience.

Another thing, the amount of disturbing dreams I am having are increasing. In the past year or so I have had dreams where I am tortured or see another person being murdered/tortured. For example, I had a dream that I was on an operating table and surgeons were slicing me open, and I could feel everything.

Would there be a reason for this increase in disturbing dreams? Or is it.. normal?

Thank you for reading my post.

The first part sounds a bit like night terrors, though it's more likely you were experiencing hypnagogic imagery. Has this happened before?

As for the disturbing dreams, they could be caused by any number of things. Have you been under an unusual amount of stress lately? Have you been watching scary movies or reading disturbing books?

The question is, how would you feel, how would you react, if you were to find out that you are watched, telepathically, every moment of your life? What if it turned out, that lucid dreaming was the early stages of telepathic development? How would it bother you?

This is, in effect, what is implied in the Judeo-Christian Scriptures. What if it is true? Some people it would not bother, but others may not be able to deal with it.

It is not possible for a mind, to learn truth, all in a moment. Each bit has to be digested before another is faced. Yet each bit changes us psychologically. We either become stronger, or we dont.

Hrm, my incident being a night terror did cross my mind, but I wasn't sure because I was able to wake myself fully. It hasn't happened before to me before so I was quite frightened. :S

I haven't been watching any scary movies recently, except for 28 Days Later. However, I enjoyed that movie and didn't find anything frightening, nor have I dreamed about any zombies or anything like that. I hardly ever watch any scary movies but I do remember watching The Grudge (Japanese version) when I was about 9 years old. I'm still frightened by the thought of a grudge-like creature, and that was 7 years ago!
I haven't been stressed out lately either.

Last night I had a dream that a man held a sword to my stomach last night, and threatened to rape me. I felt the blade against my bare body and everything. D:

Philosopher, I would feel very uneasy and unsafe if that were the case.

A natural feeling. However, unless one can learn to control fear, one cannot make progress. We learn to master fear when knowing becomes the over riding important emotion.

Ultimately, it teaches us that whatever it is that we are, we precede both emotion and reason.

Hmm, then maybe it is the fear itself that is causing you to have these dreams? It's possible that after that one experience, you were dwelling on it and it caused you to have a nightmare. And after that nightmare, you were worried that you'd have another one. With dreams, it is often that your subconscious expectations or fears are somewhat of a self-fulfilling prophecy. (Which is why dream incubation techniques work so well.) If you're worried that you're going to have nightmares, then chances are you will.

They're not so much nightmares, just 'disturbing' dreams that I have been having for the past year or so (before the 'incident').

But yes, I do admit that I have been sleeping poorly because of the incident. Someone told me that I was 'possessed' and that frightened me and made me envision all these monsters around my room.

However, I slept with a giant soft toy pillow type thing last night, and that helped me. xD I feel so childish.

Are there any other ways to help myself relax? Because sometimes I wake in the middle of the night and start having a little panic. Last night I tried to just distract myself by pretending to drive in my sleep.
