The poking of the finger through the hand didn't work for me either, this is why I discarded it.
I guess it's probably a matter of finding the reality checks that work for us.

Did you notice your hands were deformed when you looked at them?

The writing on the hand technique doesnt sound very good, so I would discard that one. Just keep using different ones untill you find the ones that work for you.

There are a lot of reality checks you can do. Look at some writing and look away, then look back and if it has changed then you know your dreaming. Thats just one but there are tons, you can look them up on this website or make your own.

...........By the way that you type, I'm assuming a few things....

      1) You looked at the back of your hand for a letter that was supposed to be written on it, and it wasn't....
      2) You couldn't poke your finger through your hand? Or could?
      3) You plugged your nose and you couldn't breathe through your nose?

#1 shoulda snapped you into lucidity, or at least wonder why there wasn't an A on your hand.
You said #2 'failed', but i think you meant it 'passed'... (Reality Check 'failing' means to 'fail' to re-assure you that you're in reality, as in, you DID put your finger through your hand, which should snap you into lucidity.)

Whether #2 and #3 passed or failed or not...... Makes sense. You're dreaming. You're testing, questionably apparently(For some reason you were doing reality checks even though you say that you were 'sure' that you were dreaming, when you totally shoulda been doing something cooler.) The point is: Makes sense. You never know what's gonna happen in a dream. Dream control isn't 100%. The only RC I ever use is the one that Emecom talks about, the 'glance at text, re-glance, re-glance' one. It's awesome.

#1 sounds like you just had a crappy lucid. meh. it happens.

The best tip I can give you: Make your reality check a clear and distinct 'wondering' of whether or not you're actually dreaming or awake, and actually try to find out. Make it count. Really find out. If you do that every time, you'll get it to happen in a dream, and bam. Lucidity. The reason the 'glance at text/numbers' RC works is because when you are asleep, info is not stored in your short-term memory the same as waking life. It's really weird but true.

Try doing some other things like looking for abnormalities in the surroundings, or just simply spin and see if the scene changes. There are many ideas. If you were sure you were dreaming, you should have just gone ahead and proceeded with the dream, though the reality checks failed, so I would advice against jumping off buildings before making sure the reality checks work.

Ok, it is a simple concept that I think many people forget. Things work in a dream because you think they will work. This goes for occurrences, locations, control, and yes reality checks as well. The reasons certain reality checks don't work for everyone is because people are different and will have different levels of confidence for the success of a reality check. That said, do you do reality checks in real life (even occasionally)? When you do these reality checks, are you honestly questioning reality, or merely going through a pre-defined motion that has become a habit? There was a point where I was doing reality checks quite often, but because it had become a habit and less of an actual question of reality, this lackluster attitude would carry into my dreams so the reality checks would not work. (because I subconsciously expected them to fail like in real life)

So to make a long story short, make sure you are actually doubting reality when you try them in real life. Expect them to work, visualize them working, if they don't work, try to force it a little to make extra sure. Spend a minimum of 30 seconds trying to make it work before giving up, and if this was the problem, you should be well on your way.

Yah the A wasnt on my hand... and i couldnt poke my finger through my palm and the nose breathing i dont remember wat happened... but ya guys your advice is good i recently started to ACTUALLY question reality when doing reality checks instead of making it a habit to do a RC...

Thanks for all the help guys sorry for the late reply
