I need help. I think I am having "False Awakenings"

(First off, sorry about the double post, but I posted this in the Newbies section, and then I thought to myself 'It's probably only Newbies who look at that forum.', so I thought I would post it here. If there is a problem with the dual post then please just delete the other one.)

I have been reading through this site for a few days, and I have been working on developing a personal method to induce LD's. I was not sure that I completely understood the concepts of attaining lucidity, but I found a great thread called How to WILD, by BillyBob.
(Sorry there is no hyperlink. It won't let me put one because I'm a new user.)

After reading that last night, I got closer than I ever have to becoming lucid. The only problem: I think I may have had a false awakening or something of the sort. I came to a point in my dream where this person had to leave, and I was disappointed, but then the dream started to fade and it was dark. I thought to myself 'It's a dream you can make them come back.', but then I said 'No you can't. You aren't asleep anymore.', yet I never opened my eyes because I was trying to chase the dream. In the end I fell back asleep, and they never came back. When I woke up I was pretty sure that I never actually woke after that dream, and I think I had a false awakening.

Are there any methods that help you to realize you are indeed still dreaming? I've been trying to LD for a few years, and this seems to be a major hurdle for me. I keep reaching the point where I am conscious, yet I tell myself I'm awake when I am indeed dreaming.

Do a reality check every time you wake up.

      ^ yes, what James said.
Doing this has helped me recognize false awakenings quite a few times.
      It's all in your head.

sweetness. thanks for the tip. I have only been experimenting with WILD for two nights, tonight will be the third. I feel like I got really close last night, so hopefully I will do it tonight.
