Sit down in a quiet, comfortable environment. Chairs are fine. Distractions can be annoying, although as people gain experience some report an ability to meditate with more distractions. Now bring your attention to your breathing. Allow air to flow naturally in and out. Do not try to force other thoughts out of your mind. Instead, simply focus on your breathing and eventually thoughts tend to calm down. If you catch your mind wandering simply refocus yourself on your breathing.

      Tips:
-Do not judge your meditation, or worry about doing it "wrong". Simply allow yourself to relax.
-To me, position is not important so long as you are comfortable. If you have to lie down to be comfortable, do so.

There are numerous varieties of meditation. This is just the type that I use. Google will provide a plethora of alternatives.

Pay attention to the feeling of breathing to the exclusion of all else. Sit or lay down. Just make sure you're comfortable.

The goal of true meditation is to quiet the mind and emotions while remaining completely present in this moment as your awareness begins to expand. I agree that one of the best ways to do this, especially if you are starting out is by bringing your awareness to your breath. For a while you may even want to just try some concentration excersises to practice maintaining a quiet mind. You can ask yourself "I wonder what my next thought will be" and then see how long you can go before your next thought pops up. Otherwise like Ascended said just let the thoughts pass through your awareness, don't give them any attention, and they will quiet over time I don't have any experience with WILD but a big part of it is having an anchor, so for WILDing I would imagine you would want to silence your mind and put all of your attention on your anchor as the body goes to sleep. Meditation would also help with WILD because after a while you learn to just be aware of everything in your experience, including itches and things like that. This would help you stay still longer being as you are not identifying with the body, you are just aware of it.
