Not really. THe question, "How do you meditate?" could mean two differnet things.

You could be asking how meditation is done, and teh basics of it.

Or since their are thousands upon thousand of meditational techniques you could be asking the techniques we use to meditate. Specification is needed.

Wow UMJ. I have not seen you around in a looong time!

There are many variations of meditations. So your question is a little vague.
It seems however to me that all the ones I am familiar with have breathing techniques involved somewhere in their teaching.
Silence is another good thing to have.

A good question I think to begin is what are your purposes and what do you wish to achieve through a meditative process?

I would google it to see what kind of meditation your looking for. Most, if not, all meditation requre a lot of practice.

Then I recommend studying relaxation instead of meditation. People often cite relaxation as a goal or effect of meditation. However, I find relaxation far more effective in creating relaxation. Ahem... Let me rephrase that. Meditation will not necessarily, by any means, relax you in a deep way. You can engage in pretty good meditation - meaning single-minded focus or no-minded focus - while still have substantial muscle tension. In fact, some methods require it! So, instead of meditation, look up relaxation techniques. It can require substantial effort for someone new to it.

A simple version: Lay down. Take some full breaths and feel yourself relax as you exhale. Visualize a glowing golden ball at your feet. Feel its warmth and feel it relaxing the muscles in your feet. Then move it up your legs slowly, feeling the muscles relax as you do so. Etc., until you've covered your entire body. Then move your focus around your body, checking for tension and releasing it when you find it.

Spirit guide? Again, I recommend something other than meditation for that. Read some books on neo-shamanism.

I'd suggest getting into a bloke called Alan Watts. There's a guided meditation tape of his I've got somewhere. PM me and I'll see if I can send it over.
