I remember a thread about a week ago that was talking about how peoples family members and friends don't support lucid dreams or think they're weird. I totally disagreed with some people that were saying you should keep lucid dreaming a secret because it just causes problems. I wanted to test what they were saying with people that I knew here were my results.
Ask around! Share results, after reading this, post some reactions that friends or family have had on the topic of this thread good or bad, it's just interesting how people react. Maybe we can convince some people to be more open about it.
Note: The only people I am very close to in the list are my parents, others are just work friends and acquaintances. Unless noted, I'll add more as I remember them.
Mom: Didn't understand it at first until I related it to some night terrors she always has, and explained what sleep paralysis is. She now reads my dream journal on the site regularly. Took about a week for her to understand it.
Dad: Was very interested from the start, but again had a hard time understanding it. Note that neither of my parents were up to try it (When I close their door at night I still say "Have a lucid dream tonight!" )
Jake (Work): We were talking about hallucinogenics like shrooms, ACID, and DMT. Some aspects of ACID were coming close to some aspects of lucid dreams, and I felt like he wanted to describe it with some lucid terms. So I said oh so It's kinda like a lucid dream I've had one of those before. Then surprisingly he got all excited and was like wow I didn't know anyone practiced lucid dreaming except for me, then we got into an hour long discussion about it.
Chris (Work): Mentioned lucid dreaming at a party, he said he's heard of it and is very interested. That night I told him some info and he seemed excited about it. Also I talked to him at work for about 15 minutes about it and he said he had tried doing it since the party!
Nathan (Close Friend): Didn't really get the point of having a lucid, but was still interested in what the experiences was like. Oh, he was interested after I told him you can have lucid sex
Nicole (Close Friend): Once I joined this forum I told her about it, and she had an instant connection after I explained it because she's had OBE's before but didn't even know what they were. She also reads my dream journal sometimes. She tells me she isn't interested in having one though.
Well those are the highlights of my experiences, I've told almost everyone I know. No one has thought it was stupid, but a lot of them just don't understand. If they seem interested at all explain it to them in more detail or give them one of your experiences, it's nothing to be ashamed of. If they pick on you or make fun of you then they obviously aren't intelligent enough for you to be friends with them. So, I wanna hear some stories too especially funny ones and parent ones.
