      Regret

Do you regret things you've done?

I've noticed lately that a lot of my dreams are very emotional and are full of things that I would change if I could. My parents always told me to live it up in high school it's going to be the best time of your life, I didn't live it up and was fairly depressed in school. I now regret all of my high school years and it's appearing in my dreams.

In my dream last night I was at a huge upscale dance or party in a fancy hotel, I was dressed in a black tux and a red tie. I arrived and looked around a little bit, there was just this feeling inside me that felt like extreme sadness or regret I can't explain it. My ex girl friend from a while ago walked in, her name was Amber. We both caught each others eye from about 30 feet away, she just had this look on her face that just drew me in. It was a look of intense passion and sadness at the same time. I broke up with her in my high school days and I just felt the urge to walk over to her. I had this overwhelming feeling to just give her a huge hug and I did. It was probably a 20 second hug and it felt so good... I whispered I'm sorry for what I did in her ear. It felt like I was comforting deep sorrow that she had, almost like someone she loved just died.

Throughout the whole dream I was pretty much crying and felt very depressed and alone, but I also feel like it was therapy. My dreams are clearly showing me things I regret doing in the past, and I often have dreams about high school which are hardly ever good ones.

I just had to post this, the emotion was crazy... Has anyone had these feelings in dreams before, this isn't just normal sadness and passion it was amplified within the dream and gave me a truly amazing experience. Also do you dream about things you regret?

I've yet to have any feelings of depression/sadness. I've had plenty of other intense emotions though. Feelings of failure, frustration, fear, jealousy. One particularly interesting one was a feeling of "ill-omen" or "foreboding" from a lucid dream as I approached a large ornate door underground ( Such bad vibes that I didn't even enter the door, I ran out immediately).

I suppose it's all a part of the dream experience. Dreams simulate real life, and real life is full of emotion.

Regret solves nothing. I wouldn't be where I am without the mistakes I've made. Sure, I'd like to change some things but when I think of but I'd miss what I've gained from the mistakes I've made.

School is one thing in particular. I dropped out and I do regret doing it. However, I wouldn't change it now. I often dream about school so, deep down, I am thinking about it a lot. What is done is done. It can't be changed now.

I have an idea. Why not use lucidity to do the things that you regret not doing? What if, say, you went lucid in one of the regretful dreams and started off by doing or not doing what the dream's regret was centered around? I don't know if it would help or not, but it might satisfy the part of your subconscious that exhibits such strong remorse, maybe to the point where you stop having regretful dreams, if you don't like them. I cannot guarantee that it will do anything, but it seems logical enough.

      Because dreams aren't real.

Anyway thanks for all of the help and comments that you guys gave me, it made me feel better. I thought about it and realized that my life is really good right now... Why look back when I can look forward

Regret is an illusion. It is a channel through which one observes the past self as the person he is now. The illusion is that the past and present version of that individual are the exact same person, when in reality, they are not- they are two completely different people!

The ability to feel regret shows that one has grown wiser. However, it is felt because a person may forget that had he not gone through certain life experiences, his growth could have lead him in a completely different direction if any at all. The person you are NOW is composed of a myriad of life experiences and thanks to those experiences, you have a certain personality. It is thanks to what you have been through that makes you the person you are today.

I wish I had known then, what I know now - The paradox in this statement is found in the question - "How could you know?" You know now what you know now because of your life experiences! In many cases, had you not gone through what you regret, you would not have learned your lessons and grown as a person.

Regret is good in that it shows you have grown, but negative if you truly let it make you suffer. There's no reason to suffer needlessly with regret. Take peace in the fact that you are a better person now and that you'll have many opportunities to share your good qualities with others in the future.

I've been there and sometimes it does manifest in my dreams. Instead of looking at it through lenses that say "I wish I hadn't done that! I'm a terrible person!," I realize instead that now I have grown enough to understand the mistakes I've made in the past.

This is just how I see it.
