Hi Kiwi, you know when you are drifting to sleep and sometimes you hear noises like maybe talking for a second or in your mind you see a scene develop and quickly go, well this is the hypnogogic state. Now, the main reason hypnagogic imagery occurs is to induce relaxation for your mind so that you can fall asleep. So in order to take advantage of your hypnagogia to initiate lucid dreams, you need to keep a certain degree of conscious cognitive awareness as your physical body is drifting off to sleep.
