I only remember dreams ( and lds ) that I have after going back to sleep. What should I do?

I am keeping a dream journal and filling it with entries, but I can usually only remember things that happen after I go back to sleep in the morning or wake up during the night. I rarely remember a dream that happened in the night itself.

Is there a way to use that to my advantage? Like developing some self waking mechanism so that I would wake up without an alarm clock. Or change that so that I could remember regular sleeptime dreams as well? I'm a bit lost.

Since you won't be sleep for as long in the morning, your probably waking up just after a REM period, (the period where you have most of your dreams) so you'll remember them easier. I'm not an expert though

You could set your alarm clock to wake you after 4-5 hours sleep, and your recall will probably increase.
