My mom is an idiot

OK, I've been telling my mom about lucid dreams I have (minus some parts) for about 2 months now. She has seemed semi interested, but today, when I told her, she started going, you know, it really bugs me when you tell me about those things. I asked her why, and she says, "oh, well, you just always get into negative things". I'm likw, what the hell, how is LDing negative? She goes, not that in particular but it's always weird or bad, and you can't ever seem to have fun with normal stuff. I tell her that I record music more than i LD, and she says she just doesn't like that I can't find pleasure in normal activities. I DO!!! I like to do a lot of normal stuff! I ask why it is wrong for me to do something that is both healthy and fun and she says "well, I just think there are so many other things you could be doing". WHILE SLEEPING??? She says I obsess over things like my dream journal (which I only kept for like 2 weeks before I could get my dreamsigns and recall) and negative government cover-ups. I say it's because it interests me, and she says why can't you be interested in positive things, I always focus on the bad. So wait, positive government cover ups? Last time I checked, people don't cover up the positive. She says she only half belives it is even real, so I told her to go to this website and told her about the studies that proved it's existence. She said she "didn't care". Anyway, the only real reason she hates it is because she doesn't understand it. She never likes what she can't understand.

yea cobainkid, I have that exact same problem, my parents are like WTF?! and they dont want me to talk about it to them or hear about it so its something that I never mention to them.....bottom line.......ur not alone

Well, I talked to her about it because she is usually interested in me. I get along with her well, she just gets weird some times Hehe my cat just squeaked. Adorable.

People are afraid of things they can't understand. If she had a lucid dream tonight I would suspect her views would change. Most parents are very set in their ways.

It pissed me off mostly because my mom is usually very open minded, but I guess not about this. She is a musician, you know.

Well, can`t say that I have the same problem but my mom is really skeptical about anything mistical that isn´t in our religion. If she jockes around with it in the table, my brother and me say jockes and bother her about the same thing you said. How can it be waisting out time if we are sleeping, and saying that she is soooo skeptical and now she feels a little weird jocking around with it and she has like some kind of respect. but don´t mind does old minded people, i think we are expanding our mind at whole new levels.

This is why I don't tell my mom about LDs I havent telled even my sister, if she asked anything about it I would be pleased to give her some information. I think my dad would be like "What are you talking about?" and then forgot the whole thing. My mom would be like "Oh, nice..." and wouldn't be intrested (or wouldnt care). My sister would be the only who maybe would be intrested.

Oh, i feel real sory for you. My fmialy thinks its interesting and they alays joke aournd wiht me by saying, "are you dreaming?" hah hey, better for me. It helps. YEa I havnt really found anyone i knwo in my life who isnt interested in it.

I asked my mom about how she went to sleep once, (she had some sleep problems several months back,) and she told me about a technique her therapist (for the sleep) taught her which was identical to something I read on these forums. Then she described to me that sometimes she saw different things before going back to sleep at night (the first stages of a WILD) and I told her about LD'ing, which she didn't understand how it's possible to control your dream. I just told her it is and some people are able to do it naturally. I have a couple friends I might ask them about LD's, because they're the ones that I think are mature enough to understand the concept.

I agree your mom is an idiot. The sad thing is that your less likely to fill her in on your life because you'll antticipate a negative response. My mom is the same way, but it took me getting older moving out and egnoring her that made her wake up. Now she at least tries to be supportive and positive, but she's still negative as hell.

Cobain, firstly your mother is NOT an idiot. Secondly, I wonder why you guys cant be quiet? I know I have this urge to reveal to other people the realm of LD too but firstly think if they are ready to hear that. Also, you are mad at your mother because she doesnt "approve" LDs? Dont care about that. Keep on excercising and keep your mouth shut. Otherwise, 'get' in your mother's mind , try to understand what and how she thinks...eventually you will see that she reacts like that because of her affection and because she cares about you and your life. Tell her, that LDs are not like witchcraft or magick etc They have been (ap)proved by science. 8) If her stance does not change, just dont refer to LDs anymore. I bet you just didnt tell your mom about LDs the way you should have. You shocked her. And please dont call your mother "idiot". Without her, you would not even exist

Just my two cents here but I agree with SweetMelancholy. My parents are VERY old school and I simply chose not to share my lucid dreaming "hobby" with them (nor with anyone else in my family).. it would simply serve no purpose to do so. Does the fact that my parents would consider LDing "odd" make them idiots.. hardly. And as SweetMelancholy stated, I wouldn't exist (nor possibly be able to LD as well as I can) without their genes! I know when I was younger I definately didn't appreciate all that my parents did or said but now that I'm a parent, my views have changed and maybe so will yours.

I am most likely within 5 years of your moms age. The only people that become enlightened are those that are ready to become enlightened if that makes any sense. In the 70's I was not interested in the normal things. I could care less for playing baseball, basketball, or football, although I did enjoy watching Mohammad Ali fight! I was into space, electronics, meditation, biorythms, psychedlic music. My parents didn't understand either, but they did let me go my own way. Tell your mom that from what I've observed here at Dream Views, it appears that the average member is 10-20% more intelligent, more sensitive, and more open minded to the subject of the mind and how it works than the non member.

After a lot of searching in religion, the closest I could come to and make sense of was Islam (with the exception of a lot of Buddhist and Hindu ideas). Well, about 2 months ago a gave Shahadah (confession of faith). Now I'm a middle-class white kid in the BibleBelt. For the first month, everyone I knew was trying to "save" me. I quickly learned to just avoid theological debate. My mother and grandmother are as southern as it gets. I don't even try with them. When they ask why I won't eat pork chops, I just tell them I don't like it. LoL. Somethings, I guess, just aren't worth the fight. I wouldn't think lucid dreaming to be one of them. Everyone I've brought it up with is fascinated by it. It probably is the cultish aspect of it that bothers your mother. If she seems too uncomfortable, either let it go, or go all out and teach her about it.

I don't understand how people can believe that lucid dreaming is bad. It's just a hobby, like collecting stamps or playing an instrument. All you're doing is controlling your dreams, having fun with it, and while your awake you write in a dream journal in the morning and ask if you're dreaming (I even asked myself that before I was introduced to this site. ) It's not like we form cults or sacrifice cats in the process. I haven't told my mom about my lucid dreaming yet. Even though she's a very open minded person she's still a mom, and would probubly think that this is another wacky thing I do to drive her crazy. (even though all the wacky things I do are because I want to, not to be different.)
