RC's can definitely fail. Most RC's don't work for me at all. Usually, I will just have an "Aha" moment and know it is a dream. The nose pinch RC has never worked for me and actually caused me to lose lucidity sometimes. Also, I find going along with a storyline that the dream provides me with causes me to lose lucidity. If I become lucid in the middle of a storyline, the first thing I do is walk away from it. However, these kinds of things are different for everyone. Don't rely too heavily on other's experience, just experiment in your dreams and find what works for you.
If the first dream skill you want to try out is flying (which is a great place to start - both fun and useful) you can incubate this. Throughout the day, notice what it feels like just standing with your feet on the ground, then close your eyes and imagine what it would feel like to be able to just float up and soar around. When you are falling asleep, state your intention to yourself to fly in your dream. Don't get discouraged if this takes you a while to achieve. The first time I actively incubated a new dream skill, I was having two LDs a week and incubating the skill every night, but it still took me over a month to accomplish! So far, it sounds like your doing great. Many people get so excited with their first LDs that they wake up after a few seconds.
