I've recently been experimenting with immersive daydreaming/visualization.I've found two things so far.
One: Like someone above me said, you can't try to be too controlling with it. If you simply nudge it along with, say, a couple keywords, or a memory or certain feeling you are going for, it will start developing on its own. Also, it helps to be relaxed. If you've been laying down for about 15 minutes, as opposed to 5 minutes, the visualizing will come much more naturally.
You have to give into your subconscious a little. Think about it this way, when you are dreaming, surrounded by an environment of your own imagination, YOU aren't directly in control of it...its your subconscious! Let it do its thing.
Two: This has been becoming more and more obvious to me, and seems to help a lot. When i was visualizing before, I was always trying to actually SEE it in front of my closed eyes... that is to say...I was
trying to use my eyes to imagine/visualize things. Now...that's plain silly. Cause your eyes are closed!
Here is the trick: Ignore the eyes/the darkness in front of you. They're of no use to you when daydreaming/visualizing. Instead, look INWARD. its your mind that's going to provide you with the imagery you seek, not your eyes.
Its really hard to explain...but if you manage to ignore trying to "visualize with your eyes" you will get what I'm saying.
I hope that helped somehow.
