I'm scared to lucid dream because of sleep paralysis

Hello, I'm a 13 year old girl and I REALLY want to lucid dream, in fact 2 months ago I was about to in just a week because I was doing a reality check in a dream but I woke up, the funny thing is I wasn't excited... anyway, now that I have done lots of research on lucid dreaming, I heard that after you lucid dream you can go into sleep paralysis. I'm scared, I even get scared very easily... I heard if you breath fast/wiggle your toes or fingers it will stop but either way, I'm scared....

Please help, I would really love to lucid dream but sleep paralysis is getting in the way, also, no I have NOT been to 9gag so it is not coming from there....

      Thanks!

Uh, I don't think you have to worry about that. People are naturally paralyzed when they go to sleep so they don't act out their dreams. If you're not normally aware during sleep paralysis I don't think you'll suddenly start to be. I've had plenty of lucid dreams and I've never had any weird experiences with sleep paralysis.

LDing does raise the risk of sleep paralysis, people say it doesn't, but it does. It isn't anything to be afraid of though. I recommend reading up on SP here on the site to put your mind at ease. I have been LDing for 6 months or so and had it happen once, so it isn't the most common thing ever, most people never have it.

Good luck on LDs. It is very much worth the risk of SP once in a blue moon. One of the most amazing experiences ever. I hope this helps. If you have any questions about LDing feel free to PM me.

Good luck on lucids! Welcome to DV!

True ^^. Never had SP when lucid dreaming. You are not gonna notice it either, unless you have a SP disorder, which you don't have. And if you are trying to DILD, there is even less chance to experience anything. You just go to sleep normally and realize you dreaming during a normal dream.

^ the best explanation I have been able to find on Sleep Paralysis/REM Atonia
I hope that I will experience it someday, cause to me it seems more fascinating than scarry!

EDIT: It's kind of a long read, but if you don't mind it's very informative!

Also to add, i have once gotten false awakening that started very similar to what people call SP experience(then again i was reading about SP those days), so that might be one of reasons why some people confuse the meaning of SP.

i had SP before it's nothing bad, it's just like being pinned down... but with hallucinations... i've never had hallucinations.
it was only cause i woke up from a nightmare with no ability to move...

don't worry, it's very unlikely to happen..

In over twenty years of lucid dreaming I have only experienced sleep paralysis twice, and only once was it actually caused by attempting to lucid dream. Each time I was pinned down, heard a loud static-like sound, and I was able to look around the room.
Yes, it was weird, but it isn't scary, if you know what it is. It can't hurt you.
True conscious sleep paralysis is extremely rare, does not last long, and is actually a very fascinating experience.

In the 3 or so years I've been active on this site, I've only encountered Sleep Paralysis 4 or 5 times and all of those have been within the last year. They were not at all related to lucid dreaming but seem to all follow a pattern of falling asleep at a weird time (if I take an hour to fall asleep and don't move, if I wake up and then immediately go back to sleep, if I wake up wrong I can wake up into it, etc.). None of my lucid dreaming attempts have ever brought me to Sleep paralysis and when it happened I was able to understand it and not get too freaked out by it. It is a very intense experience. I have enjoyed it and been terrified by it. But my knowledge of lucid dreaming did help me understand it and handle it.

If you want to Lucid Dream and not worry about SP, I'd recommend learning the MILD method, and combine it with strong Auto-Suggestion before going to bed initially. It's not as reliable as WILD, which allows you to transfer directly into the dream state (usually going through SP in the process), but it keeps you from recognizing the SP stage because it doesn't rely upon you being conscious to achieve Lucidity.

Once you experience SP a couple times though, it stops being scary and actually gets rather entertaining and amusing, and it can be almost as fun as Lucid Dreaming itself once you recognize it. The sensations and experiences are interesting, and best of all, if you can last through it and try to relax, you can then transition straight into a Lucid Dream.

I do have some thing to add. I do lucid and dream stuff but i also have night terrors and there basically lucid nightmares. Usually im running and i have lesss control over where i go in the dream. like ill try and run from demons or something and i cant control where my vision is. ill be trying to run but i can only see downwards. but thats unrelated what happens to me is i get so terrified i wake myself up screaming and sometimes i wake up in sleep paralyze. when i wake up my first instinct is to get out of my room but cant because i cant move. i dont think this will help you but if anyone else has this just puttin it out there.
