      Question on stages of sleep.

So, I was reading Stephen LaBerge's Exploring The World of Lucid Dreaming, and I read about the sleep stages more in depth. I read that REM phases begin way after first falling asleep, but that confuses me; if that's true, then why is it that I can fall asleep in class for about only ten minutes or so but yet I have dreams? Thanks!

Sleeping in class is pretty much a nap, and naps are known to get you straight into REM. Just think of being awake as a very long WBTB, and then when you fall asleep you go straight into a dream. This is only more likely in the late morning though. In the afternoon (well, depending on when you wake up), your body clock is resetting so it will be harder to get into REM.
