Hypnogogic imagery and the realisation of it!

Hi, this happened quite a while ago but thought I would mention it after being inspired by some threads.

So I had some extremely vivid hypnogogic imagery a while ago when I wasn't slacking on my DJ and things. The premise of the 'session' was a black background followed by various shapes then a huge colourful gears and mechanisms moving around (as an engineer this was amazing to see).

Anyway, I didn't seem to 'step' into any lucid dream (I have had lucid dreams the night before and recently) I remember this experience so vividly but i know it wasn't a lucid dream..I could hear my heart racing feel my breathing get heavier etc. I've not experienced this again and it was not WBTB it was at the very start of my night.

      Any thoughts?

I'm a novice when it comes to LDing, but I think I can relate to what you described. Some time back I practiced a kind of meditation that was more a relaxation technique as opposed to mindfulness. Almost hypnotic. I would concentrate on the patterns of light, color and shadow behind my closed eyelids.

There would be points, flashes, explosions, fractal patterns, swirling colors, sensation of falling through what looked like a wormhole, and sometimes sceneries which could include forms of people. Sometimes the clarity and definition could be almost life-like.

I've never had a LD, but after reading a lot of the WILD info on this site it sounds like it could be used as part of the technique to form a dream space? I have no skill or experience as to how to do this while allowing my body to sleep and maintaining my waking awareness and then stepping into it...

Its certainly an interesting experience, I've experience the stepping into a dream type scenario but lacked control over the whole situation. Where did you hear of this meditation technique? Just out of curiosity, were you trying to sleep when this was occurring?

I stumbled across this before I understood the basics of Buddhist meditation. I was exerting my will to fixate on and manipulate the imagery, and I suppose it would put me into a hypnotic vs. meditative state. Sometimes I'd even fall off into sleep, even though that wasn't my intent.

If I work on the wormhole imagery hard enough, it feels like I become part of it, hence the sensation of travelling down into it. And yeah, it's a very interesting experience.
