Nightmares or bad dreams can make you lucid enough to just tell yourself to wake up, don't feel bad that you didn't try to stay there, you were scared.
The fact that you got to that point where you KNEW you were dreaming is one step towards lucidity, because next time you will realize you are dreaming, in a bad dream or a good dream, you'll have second thought about whether waking up or try to stay in the dream and control it.
