Imagine being able to do this every night. You usually do a lot of things in 10 years. I wonder if he has retained all this information.

I think the only reason he was able to have such a long dream was because he was near death. When you're dying, your body releases all sorts of endorphins, which, among other things, skew your perception of time. I reckon it would be impossible to have such long dreams without drugs.
