The way I see it - it's whatever plot your brain chooses to simulate / dream about. By that I mean that sometimes dreams might feel "layered" like in the sense of "a dream within a dream", while in other occasions each FA leads to a completely different and unrelated dream. So basically, this feeling of "a dream within a dream" is just an illusion, like a fake memory or other plot devices - if the "dreams" are connected plot-wise and you can move between them "in" and "out" I would treat it as one dream with a complicated plot. While dreams that are separated by FAs AND plot-wise I treat as discrete separate dreams.
So to answer your question under the way I define "a dream" - I've had lucids before with this plot of "a dream within a dream" (up to many many levels), and in some cases I could move with objects and / or people from inner levels to outer levels and sometimes even back in. But as I said - I wouldn't call it dimensions, rather just a complicated plot / dreamscape...
2. This is random, but I have a weird thing with going up/down stairs in my dreams. Stairs are a big deal. Not sure whats up with that but when Im lucid going up or down stairs brings me into an unknown or new experience in that dream. I'm not sure if this is a me thing or whats going on. How do you feel about stairs? Have you ever experienced weird scenarios with stair cases?
Funny enough I had two "stair induced lucid dreams" within the past 1.5 weeks
I think it's a sort of day residue - if you meditate in RL you might associate "going down / up the stairs" with "going into deeper states of mind". So this association leaks eventually into the dreams and might even induce a more aware state (because that's how you associate it). The source might be something else too (other than meditation), but the idea is the same - stairs symbolize for us humans ascending or descending, and when a word has more than one literal meaning the brain stores the different meanings using associations - so for example: go upstairs -> ascending (as 'go up') -> ascending (as 'become greater, more aware') -> awareness. Or: go downstairs -> descending (as 'go down') -> descending (as 'go deeper') -> meeting the unknown.
