First, you have to create an association between new places and dreaming. The way I would do this is, after each dream, reimagine the dream, only with myself identifying being in a new place and becoming lucid. After doing this, I would reassure myself that this will happen next time I notice a new place in a dream.
Then, unless this association is very strong, you have to maintain an intention to continue to make this association until it shows up in a dream. The way I would do this is remind myself of this intention via a mantra as I'm falling asleep, something like "Wait till I'm in a new place"
Then of course, once you are in a new place in a dream, you have to identify this new place as a new place. You need to have self-awareness present to do this. I don't think I'm sure of a method to increase self-awareness. I just rely on luck and good faith that the self-awareness required will be present.
This is not always easy, especially with a vague dream sign like a new place, because the more vague a dream sign is, the more variations of it there are to identify, requiring you to make more associations to cover the variations of the dream sign.
Awakenings are my major dream sign. The variations of this dream sign is either waking up in bed, be woken up in bed by something, or waking up in the middle of a random dream scene. I'm frequently aware of the awakenings themselves during my dreams, so I'm not noticing them as a dream sign, I just have to remake the association as I mentioned and maintain the intention to continue to make this association until it shows up in my dreams again. Usually, I can make this correction within a night or two if I continue to dream about the dream sign, although I imagine this would take longer with a dream sign that's more vague or shows up less.
