Because memory is everything. Every experience is just there for an instant, and then it becomes a memory. Think of the past day. If you didn't remember it, it would be like it never existed for you. What you consider "the past" you don't think of as purely a memory, even though "memory" is the only way you can experience it now.
Now imagine that you could do ANYTHING today, and you became aware that everything you saw was yours. That's a pretty darn good memory.
