That's not really an answerable question. Everybody's different. You could have one tonight, or a year from now. That all depends on your level of awareness.

There is no scpecified time for when you get your first. I got my first LDs in the first week I started. Some sooner some later.

This may be a dumb question but, how do you increase your level of awareness?

Don't worry, that's not a stupid question. There is a method that is spoken about quite frequently in the LD4ALL forum about increasing lucidity in dreams(I'm hoping that's what you mean by awareness). Anyway, what you do is in your LD is state loudly one of these things:
      INCREASE LUCIDITY!
      LUCIDITY TIMES 1000!
Usually saying one of those will help you gain awareness and lucidity in the dreaming world. Anyway, I hope this helps

Well, that's a way to increase awareness, once you're already aware you are dreaming. I think they're looking more for increase the awareness needed to have a LD in the first place.
There are a few methods for this. The one that works best for me is DILD, (dream-initiated lucid dream) where I'll notice something is just not right about what's going on, or the situation I'm in will be so intense, that I'll automatically come to the realization that I'm dreaming. A good way to train for this is by studying your surroundings, in waking life, and proving to yourself that what you are seeing is either real, or a dream. Try moving objects with your mind, things like that. Try remembering what you were doing a few hours ago. Do you remember waking up this morning? Things like that.
The object is to instill in your mind the habit of deciphering reality from the dreamworld so, often, when you are faced with an event in your dream that just doesn't seem right, you'll be able to realize it's not right, because you are dreaming.

      Make sense?
This is only one method, though. Check out the tutorial sections for other techniques and there are some pretty good ideas in the Attaining Lucidity section, also.

No way to say, it could be in the next few nights, it could be in a few months. Pick a method, give it a shot. Have a look at the other sections here, there's alot of tips on starting. Just be patient. Don't expect results immediately because LD'ing can be frustrating.

      Good luck

with me after I read up on lucid dreams and found out what they were I immediately started having them. Everyones different I'd think. Now I am obsessed with attaining them. I was having one everytime I dreamed and now I just hit a major block. I haven't even been able to even have regular dreams. I'm getting really annoyed. I'm going to try the FILD teqhnique tonight. Maybe you should try that as well if nothing else seems to work. Good luck!

I had been in to astral projection a little bit before LD, but now I've shifted my focus to LD.
Before I really shifted though, and I had started thinking about lucid dreams, I managed to have a LD after a failed AP attempt. I was lucky enough to be able to maintain it for a decent enough amount of time and have one of the best experiences of my life ^_^

You can have lucid dreams without even knowing you can have lucid dreams. I would like to say it depends on how motivated you are but, like all things, some people have it and some people...well, some people just don't. It's like rythm I suppose.

Others can be really good at dream recall but can be bad at focusing, relaxing and actually putting everything into practice. Some people do reality checks obsessively, while others don't. Some people are addicted to chocolate...this has nothing to do with anything.

Everything above (maybe not the chocolate obsessed eaters) effect lucid dreaming and your ability to induce lucid dreaming.

Please note that this comes from...three days, yes three days of experience.
