      Dreaming about a Lucid Dream?

So I'm spending the weekend home from college and i've been getting much better sleep because of that. I was starting to get really interested in LDs before I went off to school but since I left I've found myself much to busy to focus much on it, the one thing that I still remember to do, rarely, is a RC during the day.

Anyway I was laying in bed falling in and out of sleep. I hadn't been able to sleep-in much at school so it was probably around 11:00 am when this all happened and I was still trying to doze. I had a normal dream turn into what I guess was a nightmare, nothing horrifying but in the dream I was scared so I guess that counts? Looking back I find that very weird because I rarely have any nightmares at all, like maybe one a year. I remember reading that many LDs happen as a result of people trying to escape from nightmares. Just as something bad was about to happen in the dream I remember thinking, "There is no way in hell that something this ridiculous is real" and did a RC.

I failed the RC and realized it was a dream. I did get a chance to do some LD stuff like I walked through a wall and flew, well levitated more then flew but w/e. Anyway it seemed like it lasted forever but eventually I woke up. So here is my question: When I woke up from the dream I was actually still dreaming, I believe its called a false awakening? But I went from being lucid in the first dream to instantly having no idea I was dreaming after I "woke up." So can I count this as my first lucid or was I just dreaming about having a lucid dream? and also how common are false awakenings?

Oh, it was a lucid, all right. Parts of dreams can be lucid, while others can be non-lucid, and you can even become lucid again, all in the same dream!

False awakenings... We don't know exactly why these occur. Maybe it's your mind trying to take bake the unconsciousness of the dream. Maybe because your mind is awake, your subconscious thinks you are waking up, and triggers the false awakening setting. Who knows. It catches many lucid dreamers off guard, and they slip back into normal dream mode. That's why I suggest always RCing when you wake up, no matter what!

      Hola there,

Congrats on your first lucid dream!

Yes, it was a lucid dream. Although it is possible to simply dream about lucidity, the difference lies in consciousness. From the description you gave, it sounds very much like you were able to make conscious acts, "chosing to do things", in other words, and that's definately a quality of lucidity. In regular dreams we don't really chose, rather the choice is made for us and we just sort of passively go along.

As for false awakenings, they are fairly common. Some people have then more then others. They are very common after lucid dreams though. Quite a lot of lucid dreams will end in false awakenings, which has even led to people making techniques to become 'lucid' again in the false awakening dream. They call this 'chaining' of lucid dreams.

Good luck on your next one!

I believe it's impossible to dream about lucidity. Lucid dreaming means being aware that you are in a dream. If you dream about being in a lucid dream, it means that you are having a dream in which you know you are dreaming... that is also the definition of a normal LD. Although I do believe that there are different levels of lucidity or awareness.
