      I have lucid dreams a lot when sleeping at night but if I nap in the day I never have them. I dream but its rubbish, just a hotch potch of images mainly and usually really strange.

      Hey there,

      Actually, I think the reason why naps are often succesful is simply that your sleep is much lighter!

      There is a definately link between lucidity and how deeply you sleep, which is why it's generally harder to have lucid dreams when you're completely exhausted, or during the first few hours of sleep (when you're in real deep sleep). Basically, it seems like the deeper we sleep, the more our consciousness gets deactivated.

      Now when you nap, you're sleep in a period outside your rythme, and you know you're napping, and not going into full sleep. That causes you to sleep lighter (you will generally wake up from napping a lot easier as well, say when disturbed by a noise or another person or something).

      Indeed Mr Red - I cannot LD if I am shattered, and my technique explains to people to have regular sleep patters, dont get too exhausted before bed and your sleep will be lighter thus resulting in increased dream recall, vividness and the ability to LD.

      Plus we do dream outside REM sleep too; so in answer you can dream in naps.

      I've heard lots of reports of people having LD's during naps, certainly. As some others said above, it has to do with your intentions...you lay down in bed, thinking, "I'm doing this, solely to lucid dream", and that may just be the kick in the ass, so to speak, your subconcious needs for some more of those gold LDs .

      Logically, yes, you do sleep lighter, and up to a certain point I think will go into REM sleep after of course entering SP again.

      I think I remember hearing that after a certain time it will be more like your going to bed early than napping and you'll go into deep sleep, so I'd keep it rather close to your regular wakeup time, say 2 or 3 hours (if that's possible).

      Another thing is: Make sure to get lots of sleep, so you'll get more lighter sleep, and more chance for lucid dreams.
