False awakenings tend to beget lucid dreams. Conversely, lucid dreams tend to beget false awakenings. Why is this? There are two main reasons out there.
The first states that lucid dreaming is an anomalous state that our subconscious viciously attempts to guard us from, because it interferes with some hidden aspect of brain function. Therefore, the brain tries to trick us into normal dreaming by making us think we've already awakened. This view was held predominantly by the infamous banned Leo.
The second possible reason states that lucid dreaming is an anomalous state that confuses the mind. When lucid, parts of the brain make connections that usually only a waking state would make. This signals other parts of the brain to induce "wake up sequence." Of course, since we are still dreaming, the wake up sequence is mistakenly played out in our dreams! That's my hypothesis.
Sometimes, when stability is an issue, people will have multiple false awakenings per dream. I remember a lucid dream at age 10, where I had a a dozen or so in quick succession. I was wary of reality for the next 24 hours. More recently (as in, since I have began dream journaling), my most false awakening-filled dream had four false awakenings.
