      Experiment: want help (quick)

I thought of an experiment while responding to another post. Here's what I want to do: we all know that certain parts of the brain are turned down during sleep. I want to see how much. This is what I propose. Next time you are lucid take a mind game or math problem that should take some thought, but isn't impossible hard.

      Examples:

      Derivate 3x^2 + 6x + 9
A circle has a radius of 4 inches, what's the area of a quarter of it
Name a song title starting with a, b, and c in that order

See how long it takes to do a simple (but processing intensive) task and then do the task while you're awake. I'm just curious, I'm going to try and remember next time that I'm lucid.

      Stupid derivatives.

I tried a simple addition last night and I couldn't do it. It was only five numbers.

      "Differentiate," you mean?

Also, I wonder if too much thought in a dream could cause premature awakening. After all, you are taking focus off of the dream itself.

      Oops, wrong word

I visualized the number in front of me so I didn't take focus from the dream.

      Cool idea.

      I'll try this tonight.

The only problem is that it's hard to keep track of time in dreams.

      Sounds like a great idea.

I did an equation before in a lucid dream and tried to remember it when I woke up so I could check to see if I solved it correctly. I couldn't remember it outside of the dream, but then I have trouble remembering intricate things when I wake up.

I've done something similar to this already. I was with a guy, on an overpass, staring at an intersection when it exploded in color. It was like a rainbow had hit it.

I was able to identify every color, and point out where they were to the guy because he couldn't see them. Another time, I was in a room with a cd player when it started playing Korn's "Coming Undone". It played almost exactly the same as the real song, except I forgot some parts of it, so it made up it's own lyrics, but otherwise it sounded fine.

Oh, one thing I forgot to add. This was a recent dream. I was Godzilla, I was walking through the ocean, heading towards a door in the air when I heard my mom's voice ask me a question, she said "How many winters are in 55 years?" and I couldn't think of the answer :/

I guess your logical skills aren't very bright in your dreams This is interesting.

So I finally WILDed today. Not a spontaneous one, but my first actual old-fashioned WILD. Pretty cool stuff. Because I rolled out of my bed as usual, I plugged my nose, then counted my fingers. The counting alone made me remember this thread. Here's the equation I came up with:

      6x^3 + 9x^2

The answer I came up with:

      18x^2 + 18something.

I was wondering about the equation. It seemed as if I had stolen it from the thread, but I didn't remember that as the answer (actually, I just realized that both equations contain the same numbers, different order!). So I changed the equation to 6x^3 + 4x^2, and came up with 18x^2 + 8something.

I don't remember if I had the exponents right for the second half. I know didn't screw up with the simple multiplication, however. Interesting that both equations omitted the superfluous constant 'b' at the end.

After I did that, I noticed my left eye was out. Actually, I mean "entire left side of vision." I think this was a product of my own superstition.

How come instead of an x you had 8something?

I think you need some refresher on calculus. Derivates are exact, there is no b constant, you are thinking of integrals and c is the most common variable for an unknown constant.

I wonder if you could ask your DCs moderate-complex math questions and have them answer correctly

Everything makes sense once you stop thinking about it

Why 8something instead of 8x? Heh, I was dreaming. You tell me! XD

I meant the "constant" part of the post like this: take a normal y=mx + b equation. 'b' doesn't matter when taking the derivative (if it's a number, not a variable, that is). When creating my problem, I automatically omitted 'b' from the original equation, because I know that it doesn't matter in the derivative.

My terminology is off, I know. As long as I can solve a problem with the information given, I'm satisfied.
