What I found so interesting about this was that no matter how hard I would try, the cloud would always form into the exact same shape and cross my visual plane in the same manner at same speed! It's as if my mind had this cookie-cutter for making this particular cloud.
The thing you describe about the frequency of the event (formation, then fire) also happened to me - I could pretty much predict when the cloud would form, and when it would move.
Heh, got me. I have two theories:
1) Having observed one particular event, our mind "records it". In our state of relaxation (or for whatever reason), our mind plays back this clip over and over. Maybe as a way of hypnosis or redundancy which would eventually lead to loss of consciousness (sleep).
2) Our mind is actually interpreting something that is going on in our brain and translating it into a visual signal. Not sure how to explain. Like, for instance, blood rushing through certain parts of our ocular system. The portion of our brain that takes in outside information and translates it into color and light (what we see), is tapping into some other portion of our physical system and translating the signal.
Either way, it's pretty neat when it happens because it can be so real and convincing sometimes - so full of detail.
