He's actually got it backwards though, the body falls asleep before the mind... the mind is never asleep. Its always alert and aware of your surroundings. Thats why you can wake up when you hear noises, see bright lights, feel sudden movements.

Oh, I'm not doubting the mind isn't aware of its surroundings; it would have to be in order to preserve the perpetuation of our species (otherwise the lions could have easily eaten us in our sleep way back when).

My point was merely that the itching and prickly sensations aren't anything more than fabrications of the nervous system to maintain a status quo of sensory input. If one stays still to long without movement, the brain will need something to attach itself to or it will make up its own (hence dreaming etc).

In fact, if you go long enough without sensory input, you begin to hallucinate or go on psychedelic trips, as with isolation tanks and the like.

Well, I set my alarm for a few hours later to try again, but truth be told, I just wasn't motivated to get out of bed XD

So I slept. And dreamt about becoming lucid, without actually becoming lucid. Which was annoying when I woke and realised what I'd been dreaming about.

Why on earth wouldn't I do a reality check when I was running into people matrix style? O_o

Anyway. I'm getting off topic. I shall try again tonight, and let you guys know what happenes in this thread. Thanks for all your tips and suggestions.

PS: My Mum thinks you're all lying to me. She doesn't think you can induce lucid dreams. Help me prove her wrong

      Hey, fellow Melbournian.
Try tell your Mum that it works just like any other dream. If your emotionally invested in something enough, you start to dream about it. Whether it be the Matrix, a football game, eating ice cream, or lucid dreaming. Thats basically how DILDs work anyway.

I was trying to WILD for 2 months before I finally had 2 successes. Then I couldn't reproduce it for a few weeks until last night I achieved a third by taking a different approach. Maybe this approach will give you some ideas to tweak your attempts. I think its different for all of us.

I slept for 6 hours straight, automatically waking up twice in that time to quickly write down dreams in note form. Then I got up and stayed up for 2 hours, had breakfast and read about lucid dreaming on the net. Then went back to bed. Instead of trying to WILD on my back, I went to my usual sleeping position. I did a relaxation technique where you tense muscles and then relax them. I found it worked very well. Then I just lay still and went to sleep, paying attention to any random thoughts that flew through my mind and bringing myself back to full consciousness when it happened. Eventually I drifted off into an hypnagogic scenario where I was on a mattress in the middle of my room, instead of in my bed. I snapped back to awareness and found myself in SP. I was right on the edge of falling asleep when I came back to full awareness, I think it was the 2 hours of being awake that helped me do that. From that point I just waited. I started to hear a pinging sound, followed by explosions. Then a massive explosion that made my ears ring and I felt my body drifting downwards and shifting into a different position. When it stopped I opened my eyes and was in a dream.

I think my problem previously has been falling asleep, I try too hard to maintain awareness that my body can't go to sleep. I think the 2 hours of staying awake helped that as I could go to sleep normally, yet my mind was now awake enough that I could catch myself before going all the way. I'm going to keep trying this and see what happens.

However, most 'scratching' sensations and urges are merely an attempt of the brain to make up some busy work for you to do. When you're attempting to stay conscious whilst ignoring sensory input, your mind feels a need to fabricate sensory input to keep a hold of reality.

Thus, by itching and paying attention to those false bodily sensations, you are both breaking relaxation and reinforcing this negative reaction to relaxation.

The 'itching' is common within the first half-hour of deep meditation and isolation tanks, and is completely psychosomatic, and should be ignored if one wishes to become completely relaxed.

Remeber, the key here is to be the objective observer and don't judge/give attention to thoughts or sensations. Ride the train, go with the flow, and fall deep into relaxation.

I attempted WILD last night. I woke up around 6:00 AM, and as I tried to fall asleep, I caught myself just before I fell asleep. My body was extremely relaxed. After a minute of laying there, I seen some Hypnogogic Imagery, just a small blue bird. After another minute, I felt my feet start to tingle, and seen a little more imagery. After about 3 minutes of that, I felt my whole body start to Vibrate quite a bit, and then seen a whole wall of Images, just random things, and they started to spiral and shake violently. Combined with the Vibrations I was feeling, I got a little freaked for a moment, and told myself what was happening, and after a minute of that, not passing into the dream, I grew tired of it and just Forced Myself up, and then went to sleep.

The key to a good WILD, is to try to catch that moment JUST before you fall asleep, and hang onto Consciousness.
