      The Oneironauts Club

      Greetings,
I just had an idea and thought I would float it by the community. It has nothing to do with techniques, etc. I work in a prison. There is a segment of the population who have very little to do during the day and as a staff we have been trying to brainstorm ideas about how to keep them busy. The idea being idle hands are the devils playground, and in my environment, that's not a good thing.
I was thinking of starting a lucid dreaming group. Introducing the idea to a group of these guys and see if there was any interest in using social support to explore and encourage LD's. Psychologically, I think there is benefit in that they would have something to focus on. It would also provide an "escape" (usually not a good term in my line of work) for them to better deal with their circumstances. I also think it would encourage group support and encouragement, something we always try and engender in the inmates.
It might be my own enthusiasm clouding any negatives, thus the reason I'm bringing it here. Any ideas?

Do it. It may be very therapeutic for the inmates.

I think it's an awesome idea.

I'd be really interested to hear how some of them take to it.

I had this thought the other day. It occured to me: If i was in prison, I could have so much time just to perfect my Lucid Dreaming techniques. That would be cool. But talk about a cruel shift back to the real word...

The only negative outcome I could see is inmates exploring potentially unhealthy fantasies, but I don't really know how much of a problem that could be. What kind of people do you have in the prison where you work? Do you think they would really be interested?

If you do form the group, I think you should definitely consider group tasks similar to the lucid task of the month we have here. This would help in bringing everyone together attempting to do the same thing and so telling success stories would bring the group together. This would also give you a way to sort of control some of the things they were dreaming about and so you could inject therapeutic elements into the whole thing. For instance, dreaming about their crimes and resolving them in a better (and more legal way). I don't know, maybe that sounds kind of hokey. Forgive me if I sound a bit ignorant on the whole thing.

Wow....great feedback, all. Thank you. I agree that there is a danger of "exploring unhealthy fantasies", but am also jazzed by the suggestion of using LD's to try out different coping strategies to gain better outcomes. I think I'm going to give it a try and see if there is any interest. I look forward to bringing back news and updates.

I don't know much about prison or prison life in general, but I think that's a great idea, LDing is good for one in general. Not to mention I am always telling people that I wouldn't mind going to prison, because I'd just spend all my time having lucid dreams!
I would love to see this on one of those prison shows they are always showing on tv
I guess the only problem could be with people who committed their crimes for some sort of false sense of reality anyway. But besides that, it's brilliant.
Do you think non-interested cellmates would get pissed if someone was WBTBing all night? The only other problem I could forsee is that it might make waking life in a prison harder to endure. It sometimes makes waking life in the "free" world harder to endure.

I can imagine sex-LDs will become very popular.

Also I just thought that probably there are some naturals floating about the prison, could be very fun and engaging and helpful for them to take a sort of "dreamguide" position and help everyone else out with learning LDing. If you find any, they could probably also help you with organization if they are willing to, they'd have a lot of ideas for goals and fun things to do.

Lol, I can see it now.

*Group leader talks to the prison members in the circle. He turns to a hard-lookin black guy.*
      "Tyrone."
      "WHAT?" he says toughly.
"What would you'd like to do you'd never thought was possible?"
*There is a pause. A happy smile appears on Tyrone's face.*

My only thought on the negative side (them endulging in unhealthy fantasies) has already been mentioned. Other than that I think it is a great idea -- very exciting!

Wouldn't it be better to get these fantisies out in a non physical way?

Yes, it would be better to get these out in a non-physical way but LDing might (as a few people mentioned) make prison life harder to deal with since you can just "escape" every time you fall asleep...

      escapism, anyone?

Nah, but in all seriousness it'll definitely do more good than bad, I would suggest you go for it.

Even though it would make reality harder, I'm sure it will give everyone a sense of connection. During waking life they could talk about their dreams, try to dream share, and lots of good things!

      Another negative thing,
if they would have sex dreams,
who will clean the dirty clothes afterwards?

Sounds like an awesome idea to me. I think it could be tough to implement, but if you could pull it off it would be well worth it. Good Luck!

Hmm, what do I have to do to get into prison, join your group and finally have the time to LD all day and night? Yay, prison!

Update #1 Well, I talked to the warden today and she was totally cool with my starting the group. In fact, she even volunteered to buy the journals and lighted pens the guys are going to need. I've started working on a Windows Movie Maker slide show that I am going to use at the introductory session which will be in about a week I hope. Was thinking of doing a "what if you could...." kind of presentation with cool graphics from Digital Blasphemy and a soundtrack from some ethereal sounding music, like Enya or something.

Do it to the subliminal LDs MP3s here! That would kick ass! And good for you, getting the warden to like the idea.

Getting a bunch of inmates to listen to Enya... you really are breaking ground!

Lmao I'm jk, seriously though this is a sweet idea, I'm glad the warden agreed to try it!
