Spaceexplorer, at the moment the amount of revenue generated from advertising at DV is not even enough to support the cost of maintaining the server. How many ads have you clicked on in your time at DV, and how many other active members do you think, like you, do not do so?

Much of the community wants a lucid dreaming book. It would firstly, be solely a community run project, which has benefits that are obvious. It would also increase the credibility of DV as a whole. It would help DV to establish a position outside of just what it is now, and further the knowledge of lucid dreaming in general to a wider audience. It would be a comprehensive guide and informative source, written for lucid dreamers, by lucid dreamers, tested by lucid dreamers. It would continue to further Dreamviews by helping to pay for the expensive upkeep, create another source of traffic, and so forth.

As for deletion of your posts...if asher decides to allow deletion of all your posts from the database, you'd be the first I've heard of, and he'd be going out of his way to do it. You may own the copyright, but when registering at this site you entered into an agreement between the forum owners and yourself. You post of your own accord, without pressure from a third-party. If you really want to leave, you'll really have no legal standing to insist your posts are deleted. They are clearly under fair use here at this forum.

Personally, with all this drama my opinion is that if you want to walk out of the door, there will be no-one stopping you.
You merely have to change your point of view slightly, and then that glass will sparkle when it reflects the light.

What is stopping me, is that I want my posts removed.
Having run and hosted a PHPBB forum in the past (which to my knowledge is inferior to the software this forum is running on), It was incredibly simple to remove one users posts.

I think the real reason posts are not allowed to be deleted is that it increases ratings for DreamViews on the search engines.

Considering I no longer trust the way this site is run, I am not happy with my words being used to increase the search engine ratings for this site.

From a quick search online, apparently all it takes for you guys to remove all posts by a user is the following:

      AdminCP->Threads and Posts->Prune

So hardly "out of your way"
(i may be wrong, but im going to look into Vbulletin admin controlls more to find out for sure)

If it IS that easy, then clearly the rule of non-deletion is a self serving rule to increase the hits to the website.

Asher is on leave from TCI, so it would be going out of his way.

As for deleting your posts, I will discuss that via PM and see what might be done with an administrator.

Well I'm back. Sorry, I ended up working a 14 hour shift yesterday and didn't get home until nearly midnight. It was actually the most intense experience I've ever had in the operating room. You just wouldn't believe how fast and how much a person can bleed. We worked for six hours to save this person - and did

      Anyway...

Damn straight there's some great posts of his around.

I'm trying to talk S/E out of getting his posts deleted because there are so many awesome ones. In fact, that's how I meet him... I noticed his intelligent, eloquent, and scientific-based posts in amongst the general mass of 'average IQers' But he wants them deleted. It seems such a shame. Maybe the admin could wait a week and then PM him and see if I or someone has been able to change his mind??

Because even though some may be too young or too stupid to realise it, his mind is actually.... pretty cool.

I don't think it's rude. I thought she was serious. I'm glad she's not because that would be a huge stretch. *shrugs*

Her comment was in no way, shape, form or fashion rude, and I can't fathom how you could perceive it as so. Continue to misconstrue things if you like, however, - Snowy is a far cry from rude. And please refrain from playing the "age card" like age (in regards to her post) had any relevancy to the discussion at hand.

Now, for the life of me...I can't see how we went from "Let's create a DV book" to this space guy wanting all of his posts deleted. Dramaqueen much? We're not using your material space, that's already been told to you many, many times. Or would you like for me to re-word this paragraph and post it again nearly in the same manner that you re-word your questions and post them again?

      Well,

      I made my points.
I still feel the book is misguided for plenty of reasons, but no need to repeat those.

As for wanting my posts removed, the point was that threads are never authored by one person... ideas can develop due to intelligent discussion between people. If the book is to be based on the ideas developed in the forum, then almost all ideas will be authored by EVERY member of dreamviews. Not just those who take the time to rewrite the "final product" for the book.

I think that is a hugely important thing to make clear in the book, if it ever gets off the drawing board.

It is the work of every single member, not just the editors and writers who pooled the information.

And that was my main problem, the fact that it is very hard to credit ideas to people, when they are shared in forums. I hate unfairness.
To see a great idea being sold as the work of someone who didn't create it, is to me truely wrong.

I think that absolutely all effort should be made to credit the ORIGINAL inventors of ideas, not just the people who rewrite these ideas as tutorials, or people who rewrite tutorials as books. Those people are just editors, not inventors.

Cause i think there will be a lot of people fuming, if they see their ideas they shared on dreamviews, being written up by someone else who takes credit for it.

That was my main concern, and i think something those of you on the project should take very seriously. And I hope you'd agree?

Of course it was rude. Unless I've misinterpreted the post (in which case I do apologize) there was no other point to the post except to make it clear she was relieved shift was not serious about S/E becoming a staff member. As if that needed to be posted.

Age is actually relevant to the post. So relevant in fact that it allowed me to guess her age. A mature person doesn't talk 'at' people like that or breathe dramatic (dramaqueenish) sighs of relief. I'll mention it if I like.

She was referring to the process it takes to become a mod and delete your own posts.

I see how my post can be misread, and yeah, it is over the top. (I was upset at other DV things at the time) But I didn't mean it like I don't want him on Staff. I'm just saying to be staff JUST to delete your own post is a biiiiit too much.

You misunderstood: my point to him was the the policy of the dv staff is not to delete accounts and also not to delete the posts of members, even at their request. So, the only way I can think of for him to be able to delete his old posts is to become a staff member. God knows we need the brains. And yes, I was serious.

Whole lot of miscommunication going on tonight, isn't there?

I can see him on staff. But just to delete his posts? No. To actually be on staff? Yes.

What if the book was free in e-book form, but people could choose to pay for an actual book copy? It solves the problems of bringing in money, giving people a new book on LDing, and that there's no way I'm going to pay for it .

If there's a book I want to buy, I first look for a free e-book version. Case in point.

Some people prefer real books to ebooks. Could just have the book like ClouD's DV merch... pay for the baseline cost to have it in physical format, but just that straight up fee to have it printed and nothing else- no money for anything but the paper and ink. This is how I thought it was going to be when I first heard of the book.

I'm fine with that as well. But as I mentioned earlier, it's much too earlier to get technical about the proceeds when we don't have a book yet.

      spaceexplorer,

I've never been contacted about either deleting your account or removing your posts from the forum, but since you're asking, our policy on the matter primarily exists because in most cases, the missing posts resulting from deleting an account would cause unneeded confusion in the threads in which the user participated -- and particularly the threads created by the user, which would be missing their OP. It's really as simple as that; this policy predates the selling of DV for the purposes of generating ad revenue and thus has nothing to do with attracting traffic.

If a user requests us to, we can and will take steps to dissociate the account from their internet handle (change account name, clear all account information, remove access, etc.), but the account's post content itself will remain in the database and on the public forum. If there are a few particular topics or posts that you would like removed or edited, we will review these on an individual basis and in most cases will remove or edit them for you -- I'm not aware that we have ever refused to do this for anyone when they requested it, but we do reserve that right. However, mass deletion of all content is just not in the cards.

If you have any other questions, please PM me.
