One thing I learnt the hard way is not to eat or to eat very little for 3-4 hours prior to sleep as it seems to reduce my dream recall and even caused nightmares for me when I was younger (I don't have any nightmares anymore), I recommend having a large day-meal at around 3-5pm and not eat much after that.
