      The twelve-hour night

Just occasionally, I'll go to bed about 8 o'clock, fall asleep quickly, and end up sleeping till about 8 the next morning.

How does REM sleep pan out in this? From what I've read, I'll hit my REM hotspot at about 6 hours - 2 am - after I fall asleep. What happens to REM after this? Do REM periods carry on getting longer and longer, or do REM periods stop occurring after a certain amount of sleep?

Its a REM cycle. It just cycles round and round. Basically, you will just have another REM period. And another, and another.

You have a REM period every 90 minutes.

I'd imagine after the 5th cycle it would all pretty much be REM until you wake up.

Like slash said, your REM keeps cycling back. What he might've forgotten to mention is that each REM period gets longer and longer as you sleep throughout the night.

I have never slept that long before... do you get more dreams out of it?

I find the lucid dreams are less vivid if you are asleep that long. Once I sleep past 9 hours my lucid dreams are not very vivid nor do they last long.
