First lucid dream in a while

Whenever I watch TV and fall asleep with it on, chances are I just might wake up in a couple of hours. After waking from sleeping about 4 hours, I went back to sleep. I tried to meditate for a while but got tired and quit. After waking up I realized I had a lucid dream but it was very short. It went like this: I was walking down a street. I waited for a car to cross and as I crossed I noticed I was carrying a gun in one of my hands. At this point I knew I was dreaming since I don't own a gun. I decide to test it out and hit a stop sign. As soon as I pulled the trigger, I hear proceeding gunshots (From the police). I got hit by a car speeding by really fast but I just started floating up like there was no gravity. This floating thing has also happened when I had other lucid dreams of me and another car. I wokeup soon after. What can I do to keep from getting excited/scared in order to increase the longevity of my lucid experiences? It just all felt too real to even distinguish from reality. Also, I have not been keeping a dream journal as of late but I have noticed that I have been recalling my dreams with ease...should I use my dream journal?

Any comments/advice would be gladly appreciated

      Awwwesome dream congrats mate!

      from my article

I sometimes "practice" my emotional response to finding out I'm in a dream- just as astronauts require training prior to space and spend time practicing each and every motion in large swimming pools, so should oneironaughts practice before dreams- Stand in a room, try to imagine realizing you are in a dream- what goes on through your head? is it "LOLZ ZOMG i'm dreaming!" or is it "oh cool I'm dreaming, ok dream goals...", try walking around and getting used to the feeling of being in a dream- this might be tricky though if you have never actually been in one- you might want to imagine you've just discovered you are "the one" in the matrix. Walk around, think of stuff to do- simple stuff, and get used to your emotions. The overall process can last anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes.

However, I also am against the belief that you should not be emotional in a dream- if you are all calm and stuff the dream will simply not be as memorable. I prefer that the dream be shorter but to wake up full of passion, joy or whatever other strong emotion the dream filled me with

      Nice dream, dude.

I agree with yuri, dreams are alot more memorable when they are emotional, but you can do whatever you feel like, we are here to tell you to do something you dont want to do!

Yeah no problem! Im open to any and all ideas just how would I keep from waking up? It seems like the WBTB method is most effective for me meaning I can lucid dream everyday I think.

Thank you guys for your responses keep on dreamin'

Also, my friends are often appearing in my dreams(just about every dream has my friends in them) and also my school or just school seems to be a recurring theme. I would also say that mushrooms (or maybe just drugs) could be in my dreams too. I also have dreams about me driving somewhere or am on a street somewhere. Would you consider these my dream signs (friends/school/drugs)?.
Do you believe that things from your dreams come out in real life or do you think these are just coincidences?
One lucid dream I had included me fighting an employee from work (and I lost) only to lose at boxing while fighting a friend the next day.

Another lucid dream involved me and a friend searching for mushrooms. I saw him the next day even though I had not seen him for quite some time before that.

And my last coincidence is this one female friend of mine was in one of my dreams and when I woke up that day, I ended up finding her hat in my room.

Maybe these are just coincidences but I find them really neat. Also, one time I let my friend drive (who wasn't the best driver in the world) after the night before I had a dream about me crashing. I was thankful that it did not come true

Getting overexcited is a problem which, it seems to me, passes as you start having lucids more often. When I first started, when I realized I was dreaming, it was like "holy crap I'm dreaming yea!!!". Now it's just "oh, cool, I'm dreaming." I think the real reason being too excited wakes you up is that when most people get excited that they are lucid, it draws their attention from the dream, thus, the dream dissapears and you wake up. If you learn to not let your emotions draw from your attention in the dream, you can experience them fully without destabilizing the dream/waking up.

I also agree with supernova. Most people new to lucid dreams usually get too excited when they become lucid, resulting in them waking up prematurely. This is not a problem you will need to worry about. After you start to have more lucids(like supernova said) you will not be like "OMG IM DREAMING!!!:!!". you will be more like "Hey im dreaming, cool."

Because in the dream world, only things that you pay attention to exist. If you forget about something, it isnt there, which is the main reason dream sex or any other task which requires attention fails when you do not spread your attention.
