You could always mimic meditative focus, and slowly bring a scene into your awareness. Start with a leaf, imagining in extreme detail its veins, its color, its stem. Does it have a smell? Once you've got the leaf, ask yourself, what's the leaf lying on? You might be surprised to find your mind replies visually, and the leaf is on a lawn. Continue building details. You don't have to be aware of everything in the scene simultaneously (convince yourself that it's still there, even if you aren't actively looking). Rinse and repeat. Once you feel you are proficient at this, you can start directing the visualizations (it's good to start out in a non-demanding way).
