The reality is that your brain really only needs so much REM. That's why the CAT Technique is so effective. If you don't get enough sleep the previous night then your brain will go into catch up mode in the next night's rest.

Your right when you say that your more likely to have a lucid dream during the last few hours of sleep due to a slightly higher sense of awareness.

Sooo... that's where melatonin and alcohol come in. Both of these chemicals offset when your REM cycles occur. The first few hours of sleep your REM cycles are significantly reduced and then your brain plays catch up at the end.

So, if you want to significantly increase your chances you could go in a pattern of:
Night 1 - Sleep 6 hours.
Night 2 - Take Melatonin, sleep 9 hours.
I'm sure that this is true, but what about your "logic" "cells"? Supposedly, you get more of those logical thoughts later in the morning, then the "dreamish" ones. So, that is at least part of the reason why you are more likely to get a lucid. Yes, I have heard that before, and also, yeah, it doesn't sound smart and scientific .
