Me! I've only attempted it once, and had immediate success!
I also woke up for no apparent reason, and decided to try a fild. So I just lay there, completely still, and when I saw the colour swirls (they precede the Hypnogogic Hallucinations for me), I started moving my fingers as instructed in the FILD technique. My fingers didn't slow down or anything, I just kept it up applying fewer and fewer physical pressure, until only my dreambody-fingers were moving. I stopped, tried to move my physical body, but couldn't. I saw some more colours and geometrical shapes but no other hallucinations. So I gave it another moment until I saw nothing anymore, got up, did a reality check and turns out I was dreaming 
So I'd say it's pretty effective. Will try it again as soon as I get the chance.
