      Electricity During WILD

      Hi,

Lately, I've been experiencing a moderate to strong electrical current running through my body upon waking from sleep and during meditation/WILD. It's very hard to bear and can last for as long as I stay in trance mode.

It literally makes my whole body tense as if I am plugged into a wall. No matter how much I try to relax, I can't physically relax. I can't hardly think or focus while this happens.

I get tingling, numbness, and paralyzation throughout my whole physical body.

I also experience heat on my entire head and neck while meditating/WILDing. It makes me sweat like a waterfall.

While I appreciate perceiving energy, the electricity and heat thing gets overwhelming and uncomfortable.

I am wondering if anyone might have any insight as to what's going on, how to reduce or tolerate the electricity & heat, or how to take it to a new level for an AP or LD.

      Thanx,
      ~EnergyWorker~

I'm not quite sure what it is that you're experiencing, but the electrical feeling and paralysis does sound a bit like the effects of sleep paralysis. However, this condition is rare and usually only happens upon waking from sleep, and only lasts for a few minutes at most - certainly not for prolonged periods like you're experiencing.
The only reason I wonder if it might be related is because SP is like an accidental merging of waking and sleep, where the paralysing effect of REM atonia remains after we've left the sleeping state (when it's supposed to be active, so we don't act out our dreams with our real bodies). So perhaps a trance-like state mimics that effect of having a conscious mind with a sleeping body?
There are many, many misconceptions on DreamViews and around the internet relating to SP and lucid dreaming, so please read this thread before looking for more info elsewhere:
      http://www.dreamviews.com/wake-initi...explained.html
Remaining calm and understanding the impermanence of the state are key to improving the experience, if it is SP.

I have also had some experiences when doing energy meditation where I physically feel certain sensations in various parts of my body - tingling, warmth, and even pain when I'm bringing some emotions to the surface that manifest physically. I think all these things are normal, but it doesn't sound good if it's unbearable.
I think the things we expect and our mental state have a profound effect on the physical things we feel.
Maybe you can change your perception of these uncomfortable feelings and try to transform them into something that feels more pleasant.
Or, calm your mind and focus on a different sensation to take attention away from the discomfort.

I'm not sure if any of this helps, but I hope you're able to solve your problem!

      Hi Dreamer,

      Thanx for replying.

The most helpful part you offered is to try to change the perception to transform the heavy electrical current into something that feels more pleasant.

I've tried many things in the past to no avail because the electric current is so uncomfortable and overwhelming. It's so strong that it feels like it's my physical nervous system delivering the shock, though I doubt it really is.

I probably shouldn't have mentioned paralysis because it's more like a very strong tension than paralysis. I can actually move, open my eyes, and stand up at any time. Sorry for the confusion *blush*.

I read about SP and it's not that.

Since it's very unlikely that it's physical and it's just etheric or astral, then your advice should work. I'll try it

I'm open to any other ideas. Can anyone else add anything? How might I redirect the flow so that it assists in a WILD or AP? I'm not sure how or what to aim it at.

Would it help if I yelped, whined, or made pleading puppy eyes?

^^ You could try a little visualization to redirect the energy toward your intended dream:

You could perhaps form an image of some simple pathway, like maybe a yellow brick road, that stretches away from you and toward your dream. Then, with the intention of illuminating the path to your dream, you could project the current coursing through your body onto the road. Try to assume that the road needs tons of energy to remain properly lit, and then imagine that need being fulfilled by the energy in your body. In time you might feel the energy leaving your body and lighting up the path for you. You probably won't even need to take the path yourself, because your dream will likely have begun by then.

Or, a little less imaginative, perhaps, you could try simply "ground" the current, providing it with a symbolic path out of your body. Do something physical, like touching your hand to the floor or maybe the head of your bed, that symbolizes grounding the electricity. If you can become certain its been grounded, it may simply flow from your body,,, you might even be able then to reduce the current to a manageable or tolerable level, and then do a little experimenting to find out where it came from, and what other uses it might have (who knows? you might have stumbled across some sort of, say, healing energy that is just waiting for you to tame it and put it to use! )

Either of these suggestions could work especially well if you are able to maintain confidence that the energy is not physical, BTW; if you start thinking the energy is real (aka, electrical energy driven by some material-world physical force).

Oh, and I have no idea what might be causing the current, so I can't help you there...

      Hi Sageous,

Cool ideas - visualization and grounding. I'll give them a try.

That would be awesome if it could be used for healing. I'd feel real good about healing people. I've read about Reiki but haven't gotten around to getting certified. It's a fascinating and potentially useful art to learn.

Thanx for the input and advice

How much water and exercise do you get each day? Also, what are your alcohol/soda consumption habits? What sort of climate do you live in? Do you find this happens more often in one season or another? How heavy are your usual blankets?

I don't want to rule out physical causes just yet since, to me, this sounds suspiciously like a full body muscle spasm. Besides it being a thing folks may have a disposition for, they can trigger after long periods of lying still or if you aren't hydrated enough. You're already getting dehydrated from the sweating, anything else would just exacerbate the situation.

I believe there's TCM specifically for discharging heat. My feet are exceptionally cold while my head is usually a bit too warm. Check it out

Have you had any luck overcoming the sensations so far?
I just got your PM (a bit late, sorry!) so I thought I'd expand slightly on the energetic side of things.

I'm not sure if it'll work for your situation, but I sometimes do meditations to confront uncomfortable emotions which result in some discomfort in various places of my body. In those cases, I focus all my positive energy on the part of the body feeling the discomfort to bring my mind/body/spirit's attention to healing that particular place. I think of it as a similar process to the body healing a physical wound - we are extremely efficient at self-healing, but unlike automatic bodily processes, we may need to provide some conscious direction to the area that needs healing. I often find that gradually the discomfort is reduced as I sit with it, and even replaced with a pleasant feeling instead. With practice and reinforcement, I can change the automatic response (discomfort) into the new, more positive feeling as the default response to that trigger. I find that trying to avoid the discomfort only makes me stress about it more, so I like to peacefully resolve it this way instead.
If you think your discomfort might be triggered/associated with a certain mental state or situation that you encounter during meditation/WILD, maybe you could give something like this a try.

During WILDs, people may experience feelings of vibrations etc. which are a normal part of falling asleep, we just notice the transition more when we remain conscious.
I've seen people approaching these sensations in different ways:
Many people find it helps to not focus on those sensations (Sageous calls it "noise" in his WILD class), and instead focus on visualising your upcoming dream.
On the other hand, some people like to "play" with the sensations, seeing if they can manipulate them, change the speed/frequency, and take control of the upcoming dream via this route. I've also heard of people using this technique with other hypnagogic hallucinations such as images and sounds. Some of Sivason's dream yoga classes cover related techniques, particularly the Intermediate lessons.
I'm still not sure what might be causing your strong electric sensations, but perhaps some similar techniques might help.

Since it also happens when you're waking up from sleep, maybe you could use it as a cue to DEILD and turn it into a positive opportunity.

Thanx everyone for trying to help. It's probably just a bunch of energy blockages. It'll probably become unblocked over time

Good one ~Dreamer~ , you helped me view W.i.l.d as somewhat of a procedure that can be mapped out and mastered!
