But... I'm not exactly understanding what that means. How long should that actually take? A couple seconds, maybe a minute? And whenever I do RCs in waking life, I already know I'm not dreaming because I remember everything up to that point and the RCs fail. Also, how can you accurately measure "awareness" in a dream?
It's saying don't look at something and go "ah. that's real."
Seriously sit and think about it. Look at your hands, then look at text, think about your memories, look back at text, think of where you are versus where you live, look at text, look at hands, figure out if you're in a reasonable setting, then back at text. Then stare at one thing for ten seconds.
Not the exact order, but that's generally my reality check list.
Reality checks rarely ever randomly happen in dreams. They are used more to confirm it after you gain suspicion, which is done through hjabitual awareness and questioning, not habitual routine.
