Record what times you wake up naturally during the night, though this is harder said than done for some people, like me when i awake im straight back to sleep. Some suggest drinking lots of water before sleep so you wake up in the middle of the night after a rem cycle though this doesnt really work for me. I also read that your rem cycles vary every day depending on a lot of factors.

Your best bet would be set your alarm between 4-6 hours of sleep and play around with it till you find a more comfortable time to wake up.

Drinking water is a poor technique IMO!
To add to what SOS said, set your timer to 4.5 or 6 hours after going to bed, this usually will be in REM, then you can fine tune it if you are really into getting the maximum REM time.
Tip: lets say you take 30 mins to fall asleep, set your timer for 5 hours so that you are more likely to be in it.

Just make an educated guess, then adjust until you find the right time. Move your alarm a couple minutes in either direction until you catch yourself in a dream. It is hard to peg it down exactly, unless your sleep schedule is very consistent.

Have you had much success with autosuggestion? Try telling yourself to wake up after every dream. Then, just record the time in your dream journal throughout the night.
