      How to improove Dream Recall?

      Hey, I am new here.
I am pretty new to this all, and am looking to start a dream journal; however I am having problems remembering a dream full stop. I simply wake up and cannot remember having a dream what so ever that night, can anyone give me some tips on this?

      Hi! Welcome to Dreamviews.

Do you keep a Dream Journal? A lot of Lucid dreaming/recall is INTENTION. If you don't yet, I would certainly recommend starting one. The simple act of wanting to remember your dreams to log them in your journal helped me a lot. I went from remembering a few dreams a year to remember almost 1 dream per night in about 2 weeks, but that is just me personally.

Another thing you can do is autosuggest to yourself while you are going to sleep at night that you want to remember your dreams, my personal mantra I use is "I wake up after my dreams and remember them". I was skeptical as to how effective this would be but after a few days I noticed that I was waking up frequently through the night. Sometimes I remember a dream, sometimes not. The idea is to repeat something to yourself as you drift off so it is your last waking thought, and your Subconcious will take it from there. If you notice that you have a hard time falling asleep because you are too focused on repeating the phrase, do it 2 or three times until your thoughts drift elsewhere, then go to bed as normal.

If you have any other questions, feel free to PM me.

Three things you can do to get going:
      Before Bed:
Take a few minutes...or as long as you need, to get ready for bed and acknowledge that its time for dreaming. Forget about all the stuff that happend throughout the day and focus on your dreams.

      When Falling Asleep:
Repeat the mantra in your head "I remember my dreams" over and over until you fall asleep or think it has sunk in enough.

      When Waking Up:
DONT MOVE! Dont open your eyes either. Just focus on what you dreampt about last night.

And like the others said dream journals are crucial. Be sure to not slack and write in it daily :p

I read earlier today that it is useful to even put in the dream journal things like "No dreams remembered today." or "Woke up feeling sad/happy/calm/anxious/refreshed/tired." or "Don't remember dream details but I remember reading an email in my dream" -- that last one by the way is my current dream journal entry LOL. If you start like this hopefully it will improve with time.

Dream recall always improves with time. Most people start out with little memory of dreams, but if they work hard enough they can reach 4-7 dreams remembered per night.

I've read the comments above me. Sadly none of them mentioned mantra (jblb did mention it, but he didn't explain what mantra is).
Mantra is something you should learn, I personally taught myself how to use Mantrad, and later on found it on the forums and learned that it is called Mantra.
Click here for the mantra tutorial.

In order to recall and remember your dreams you need to improve your memory (obviously), both the short term and long term memory, but especially the short term.

Here is a little memory practise routine that I started using when I was a beginner that helped my recall process get kick started:

      http://www.dreamviews.com/dream-sign...reams-try.html

It have helped alot of people (based on the likes: 58!)

Anyway another good idea would be to watch some documentary about memory, I did and realized a few things on my own that I could change and instantly remember alot more than usual.

One of those realisations was that snoozing with an alarmclock makes it 10 times harder to remember and become aware of my dreams.
I realized this both from experience, but it finally hit me when I watched a memory game where the host told me to look at a picture and notice the letters and then when a letter dissapeared the host told me to loudly state what later that had dissapeared, and that was easy of course, until...

The host put a totally black canvas in between the swaps and suddenly I didn't even noticed that a letter had dissapeared, I might have noticed that one letter out of 10 was gone. I suddenly realized that this was sort of what was happening when I snoozed with an alarmclock as well, because it kept interrupting me all the time and suddenly I could barely remember anything. And I was also too tired to even care to recall my dreams.

So a big recall killer (atleast in my case) is a snoozing alarmclock.

Just something to keep in mind.

LOL sorry for sounding like a commercial add, I have probably watched a little too many of those myself... and unfortunately started using some of those terms in my own English, that has to be corrected... xD But I hope that you found my tips helpful and inspiring, because that was my main intent.

Good luck and sweet (recalled) dreams

I've heard some people say keeping a journal of their waking life improved their dream recall.
“Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?”

Yeah, it was suggested above which brought me to the fact if I am not remembering my dreams then I should try any thing that could potentially help.

Absolutely, it couldn't hurt to try. Maybe it will make something click and it will be the key you needed!
