      New Guy Here

      Hi everyone,

I've been able to lucid dream for several years now but just had one this morning that was disconcerting. Not just for the fact that it was lucid, but because it was the first time I ever woke up into another dream and truly thought it was real life. For that reason I felt compelled to join here and share it. Might be losing it! I also think it will be interesting to read the experience of others in relation to lucid dreams. Maybe I will get some good ideas

      Welcome to Dreamviews!
Was it a false awakening? Congrats anyways.

      What technique(s) do you use?

Welcome! False awakenings are so common that a lot of people suggest doing a reality check to verify that one is not dreaming as a routine in the hope of getting lucid that way.

I am reading a book about Lucid Dreaming by Daniel Love, and one of the methods he suggests is to set a random alert on a smart phone before falling asleep in the hope of eliciting a false awakening due to expectation of being woken up at random intervals. This seems like an annoying method to me and I sleep with my husband thus this really is not an option for me, but I can see how it could be a successful method for some people.

Killing: It was a false awakening. Incredibly I've never experienced one like this before. The method that seems to work for me is the reality check when I'm awake. The old "am I awake?" check and also observations about things that cannot be real while I'm dreaming. Sometimes I just realize I'm dreaming through means I'm not sure of. I've also done a few WILDs in the past although not recently. What method do you use?

JoannaB: That book sounds very interesting. I'll have to look into it. I think you're right in saying that method would be difficult to do with a spouse. I myself am awaken randomly by my wife as it is which may actually be helpful in lucid dreaming.

      Welcome!

The book that JoannaB mentioned is actually pretty good - personally, the best lucid dreaming book I've read in a while.

Your false awakening experience is thought to represent a conflict between your stress about something coming and your circadian cycle. When I have to wake up really early for work, it's also the day of the week I have the most false awakenings. I'd say it's your body that is trying to manage your anxiety into waking up and in order to prevent so it gives you this illusion in form of a dream.
